87 pickup rough idle in the rain
I have an 87 pickup 22 RE. The idle is a little low, around 550, but when it rains the idle is erratic. the rpms will drop from 500 to 300 or 200 then back to 500. If I let the truck sit at a light and not press on the gas the truck will die. It starts back up just fine though. Also when I accelerate the rpms will go up but the truck wont go faster, it will take a couple seconds to engage and then it will speed up real fast. I have replaced the spark plugs and wires, distributor cap, ignition coil, and air filter. I have also sprayed the throttle body with cleaner. I had this problem before but when I replaced the distributor cap it seemed to fix it. I have taken the cap off and looked at it and it looks good, and the gasket is brand new also. any idea would be a great help. Thanks

i have a similar issue, I have posted here:
https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116...65/index2.html
i have swapped (to no avail, same problem, only occurs when raining):
afm
ecu
plugs
wires
cap
rotor
o2 sensor
all new exhaust
new cat
all new vacuum lines
blocked of my egr
battery
starter
alternator
battery cables
tps
and i have no cel, and no codes show up when i jump the diagnostic terms
i know some of these things have nothing to do with the issue, but i listed them anyways...
if you have any luck or can think of anything, let me know, i will do the same

Make sure you dont have moisture getting into the distributor.

Hello,
I received the PM's.
I'm going to work on my motor in a minute, so real quick....
I had problems with the rain getting in through the windshield on my '92 and rain getting in through the fender (and "somehow" on the pass. floarboard....spilled drinked, cough...cough) on my '86. In both cases, my ECU and fuel pump relay were getting wet. I dried everything out, but had to replace the ECU and relay atleast on my '92. In both case, I was having idle issues, but that was coupled with a host of other issues. All were resolved with drying and replacement. I can't say this would be the problem with either of your vehicles, but rain/moisture is getting in somehow and affecting something. You will have to look where that rain is getting in and check for corrosion. If the idle problems you're having are indeed related to moisture, something electrical somewhere is shorting out.
I would look, like I said, if rain is getting into wiring in the kickpanel on either side of the vehicle and anywhere between the battery and starter circuit. That would include the fusible link, fuse panel, ground straps (block, head, chassis, etc.), and then even the distributor. The way I've come to test things is with a ohm/volt meter. But, visual inspection always comes first, of course.
Sorry for the vaguery, but it's a nice day and I'm over my viral nastiness. So, I'm making haste to take of care of business 'round here.
I'll get back later with more specifics. Try some searches in the mean time. There's are threads related to rain and gremlins already.

my toy hates the rain
what's good, y'all-
i saw the thread and thought i'd renew it with my own griping. My 88 22RE 4WD runs like a champ till it rains; then the idle drops, it coughs and sputters, if i'm at a red light it'll die but start right up, and when i put it into gear the truck complains and lurches... hugely frustrating!
i switched the battery, cables, fuses, fuse box lid, distributor, rotor, plugs and wires, and various bits of crapped up wiring, even glued weatherstripping to the sides of the hood but nothing seems to steadily fix the problem.. it seems moisture related, but if it sits in the rain i can't see any water in the engine compartment if i lift the hood, and the problem won't start up until i've driven it a few hundred yards... is the spray from the road fouling something?
figured i'd ask the specialists; your threads have fixed a lot of my problems in the past...
later! mingus

I am still having my issue, havent found anything where i can see corrosion or can see it getting wet, but yes, mine seems to be from spray from when its driving, it can sit in the nastiest storm, and if not driven until roads are dry, the problem never occurs. I spoke with someone who had the same issues, he said he sprayed wd-40 in the distributor, and it fixed it, claims that "its a bad design", so even with new components (ie. cap, rotor, wires, etc), it will still happen. so i have a little can in my glovebox to try the next time i am driving in the wet and it happens, i will post my results
