'87 4Runner SR5 brake suggestions

Hey guys and girls,

I've been lurkin on yotatech for a little while now, and I love this forum. I've loved toyotas forever, and it looks like I'm finally getting into the scene.

I'm buying a 1987 SR5 Runner tomorrow, one of my dreamcars. 130,000 on the clock, all power, moonroof, everything works, almost every available option, runs great, awesome interior, top doesn't look like it has ever been off. Frame is a little rusty in spots, but looks and sounds solid, with no visible rot. Fenders and body have a few small spots that could use a little attention, but nothing major.

Only problem is that the brakes aren't so much working right now. When I press the pedal they slow the truck down very gradually, and eventually stop it. You can't lock the brakes, and you have to push the pedal all the way to the floor in order to bring the truck to a stop. I've searched the forums to try to find what may be the problem, but no one has really described the same thing I have. The guy that I'm buying it from said it needs new front calipers. But I would assume that if just the front calipers were the problem, the rear drums would still bring the truck to a stop, albeit not safely in most conditions. I'm thinking either the master cylinder isn't functioning properly, there is alot of air in the lines, or there is a leak somewhere. Anyone have any ideas? I'm also looking for some suggestions or links on basic body/frame repair. Thanks!

Braking systems are generally 75%front brake and 25% rear so they would stop the veh but slowly sounds to me Calipers

Yeah its the same way on bikes percentage wise, front brakes for stopping power, rear for control. Is replacing the calipers fairly easy? Pep Boys quoted me at $45 per caliper with old part exchange, anyone know of any better prices? I'll try to post some pics tomorrow.

Caliper swap is super easy. Took me maybe 20 minutes, including rebleeding. Just make sure your brake fittings aren't frozen in place or you'll life.
