So I recently picked up a 87 4Runner. 22re 5spd pretty straight. Runs good at idle and up to about 3k rpm. Then it sputters and cuts out. Sounds almost like it's hitting Rev limiter.

It does it when you are manually controlling the throttle from under the hood in neutral, or when you you are driving down the road, in every gear.

Any ideas?

 

Test the TPS and AFM(throttle and air sensors), test the fuel flow with the cold start injector flow test. Make sure the air filter is clean and the exhaust isn't plugged up. Fir starters..
