Question '87 4runner 22RE rough idle when starting.

Hi all! Looking for some ideas. My truck has a rough idle at start up and it doesn't matter if the engine is warm or cold, it will more than likely idle rough when it is started about 95% of the time. I have to hold the throttle down for a few seconds and wait for it to clear out but overall it runs great. It takes about 3 attempts (worst case) to start before it will idle on its own. Once I drive it for about 5 minutes, the idle is normal. The exhaust smells very rich when its initially started and I can smell gasoline. I have looked for fuel leaks and haven't found anything. I have a longtube header, engbldr cam and cylinder head, brand new injectors. I've also swapped the intake and battery to opposite sides. No EGR. No stored codes. I suspect the engine is flooding most of the time when it's started but I'm out of ideas at this point. Thanks!

Assuming new o-rings with those injectors... Could check for
leaks around there since breaking the seal could lead to a rich condition and the smell of gas. Not sure if 22re have EVAP systems...

I checked again tonight around the injectors. No fuel leaking anywhere. I don't smell it under the engine bay. The exhaust just smells really rich at idle. Very strong smell of gas.

Maybe check underneath near the fuel tank/connections for leaks there. Might also be worth checking fuel pressure when first started cold.

Or check the other related areas...thinking maybe you've got unburned fuel going through because of poor ignition or carbon buildup in the intake somewhere. So weak spark or little air restriction or both.

Curious what it ends up being.

Is it rough like its running on 3 cylinders? Fire it up and jiggle the main injector harness first. Might be an injector harness wire that has a bad connection. Next I would start pulling plug wires one at a time to see if its just a simple spark plug wire connection. Both are simple to remedy.

Yes, happened to mine. Splices on ECU to injector wires under the intake manifold can get corroded / stiff / break. see zerokelvin's thread for pics

It would not hurt, either to do a simple maintenance item... like cleaning all temp senders and THEIR MOUNTING THREADS once every 31 years.

Please share how you did it, please? Pics?
