87 4 runner turbo conversion

Hello I am wanting to put a factory turbo or aftermarket turbo on my 22re. I am pretty mechanically inclined but I don't know what I need to get started and what problems I might have..any opinions??

Red face

There are so many threads on this just do some searching .

your going to do a whole lot of work for very little gain.

Unless your willing to spend several thousand dollars to build a engine you might gain about 35 to 40 horse power

My stock 3.4 will out work my 22rtec any day in fact I am doing a 3.4 swap in the truck i pulled out a 22rtec

also there is a forum for the 22rtec vehicles

a turbo install on any motor, you should be able to double your horsepower, but it would take something like megasquirt and a decent intercooler setup, not the factory Toyota stuff.

the last one I did was a bored/stroked vw motor, blow-thru on dual dellortos, what a blast.

you probably don't have to deal with smog, right? sky is the limit.

I guess you gotta start somewhere. Turbo setup are universal in theory in a lot of way. You need to just start researching turbo setups to get a basic idea of what you're in for. Turbo setups can be had for $600 (homebrew and self fab) to thousands and thousand of dollars depending on what your goals are.
