Smile 86 Turbo Runner

Hey guys, I just bought this ?86 Turbo Runner to replace my ?82 2wd pickup. (I missed having my 4wd) It has the digital dash removable top which is the whole reason I bought a first gen. Also a Smittybilt rear bumper. Here are some pics...

When I first got it...

With the top off just for fun and easier cleaning...

Took the running boards off. Posers...

Interior, It will get better I promise...

It has an auto transmission and I?d really rather it be a manual. What all needs to be done to do the manual swap? Anyone wanna buy a auto? What parts beside the tranny and pedals? Where can I find used transmissions? The engine is really gutless and runs like crap (better than the carbed 22r in my 82) but still not good enough. I?m gonna do plugs, cap, rotor, and wires and everything but worst case scenario if I had to find a rebuilt engine, where? Also, how do I get the grandpa stripes off?

Thanks

Good find, but I don't know if it is worth changing to a stick at this point. First, find out the state of tune and condition of your drivetrain- compression, timing, valve adjustment, all the emission stuff, transmission fluid and screen change. Make sure it is running at its best as it is. There are plenty of companies on ebay selling remanufactured engines, some with better warranties than others. Although the Turbo trucks and 4Runners are rare, even more so the digital dash, this also means they cost alot more to buy parts for. Go to www.toyotapartscheap.com , then select parts catalog, then select the year of your truck, then select 4Runner, then go to mechanical parts or collision parts, and then start going through the catagories. You'll find all turbo specific parts are more than 22re, some are astronomical. Your transmission is specific to the turbo. I think you'll find it is in your best interest to know all about the condition of your vehicle before investing more money into it. You may find it cheaper to make it a 22re with a manual transmission, or a V-6 swap with a manual than to contend with a turbo motor if it needs much. But if you're willing and financially able, a proper restoration with OEM and high performance parts is the sweetest thing to do for this 4Runner. Check out LC Engineering for engine stuff. Good luck to you!

Will a standard 22-re trans not take te power of the turbo? It is crazy slow off the start till the turbo spins up then it accelertes pretty decent. If the 22-re trans wont work then can I use a trans off of a V6 and get a bellhousing adapter?

Thanks

If I end up doing an engine swap to something besides the turbo it will be to a 1-uzfe Lexus V8.

I just looked up the transmission on the Toyotapartscheap website and the 5-speed with and without turbo is exactly the same price. Are we sure there are 2 different transmissions?

You've got an upgraded transmission in the turbo truck.. It's sought after.

22RTE's and aircraft.. expensive hobbies!

Yeah, too bad we dont own the airplanes. They are customer's. Ever since my dad started doing what he loves (planes) he cant afford one of his own.

The trans is sought after? Anyone wanna buy it? lol. I dislike auto, but it is nice to be able to relax with one once in a while. Thats when I borrow dads Tundra.

Thanks. And I think that the swap is pretty complicated lots of different suff. But your still gonna have to find and buy the digital cluster. Both of wich are gonna suck. It'd probly be cheaper to find a truck with one in it and buy the whole truck. lol.

Bump

The tranny for the 4 banger and the V6 are different but you can make them work by changing the bell housing and they will mount right up to each other.

Sorry.. I stand corrected. Manual turbo trannys are sought after.
4runners always came in auto.

Pretty easy swap though.

I've been running a non-turbo 5 speed behind a turbo motor.. Holds up ok.

By OK do you mean OK or well. Would I have any problems with the power on that trans at all? I'm not looking to increase boost or do anything very far past stock. (exept intake and exhaust).

Thanks for all the info already guys! Big help.

The stock 22RTE (turbo) motor isn't rated that much above a 22RE (non-turbo) motor, so a standard 5sp (1985+) should hold up fine.

My motor is significantly modified and I run a big clutch. I've had no problems at all, but how it lasts long term will be the real measure.

Some people run these transmissions behind 4.3L V6's with success. The turbo transmission is preferred, but as long as they are not trail or street abused, they seem to hold up well.

There is a forum for the 22rte trucks specifically:
