Totally maintained transmission, no leaks, no noises, non modified. last night driving normal, transmission temp light comes on, then shuts off. I think nothing major of it. Shortly after light comes back on and stays on. Turn on heater, turn off radio, listening, no unusual sounds. Look out side mirror, white/blue smoke coming from under my truck, not tail pipe. Pull over, find major leaking from the bell and no fluid left.

You smoked the trans.

Got low on fluid...got hot...burned up.

Fluid from bellhousing is a front pump seal leak.

I'm not sure what your question is. It sounds like you sprung a leak. Find it, fix it, fill up the fluid and hope like heck that everything is still working.

The fact that you pulled over and did not straight up loose all power and get stranded leads me to believe that you will be alright once you get that leak fixed.

FWIW, turning on the heater will not help transmission temp since the heater is part of the engine coolant loop, not the transmission loop.

Pretty much. I'm guessing I have to drop the tranny to change that?

I doubt it will be fine.

Cooler the cooling system runs...cooler the tranny runs. They are linked my freind. The trans cooler is intergral in the radiator.

Should of pulled over the second the light came on. Trans fluid looses its ability to work properly the hotter it gets.

Im sure it stinks bad. Id fill it up...find out how bad the leak is...
But either way that trans is coming out. Front pump seal is not something to drive around with leaking.

Whats its status now? towed home? sitting on the side of the road?

Towed to my moms, figuring out how to get a trailer to get towed to my dads, and drop the tranny there.

Was it shifting weird, slipping?

try adding a few quarts cheap trans fluid and see how bad it is leaking.

run your finger around were it is was leaking last night. smell the fluid on your finger. does it smell burnt? there is no other smell in the world like burned tranny fluid. it stinks. and lingers forever it seems. my gargage reeked like a burned trans for years when I was rolling my mach1.

Well..see how bad the leak is...toss a few quarts of the correct cheap trans fluid in. Start it up...in park...check and see. If its chugging out the bell...you are gonna have to pull the trans. If you are going through all that trouble...
you may as well get it rebuilt or find a known good used one.

Simply replacing the front pump seal is a gamble since you cooked the juice in her so to speak. no reason to take it out and replace the seal to have it start acting up again.

Either way...get some transmission line flush. its in a spray can the will connect to your trans cooler lines. flush out the trans mission cooler with a couple cans of that. no reason to shoot the burned fluid in it through the new/used/ trans. Get a new torque converter or use the one with the
know good trans. No way to clean out a torque converter well enough once you have gotten a bunch of burned juice through it. If you must reuse torque converter...drain it out. soak it in a bucket of good trans fluid..drain it out...and repeat till fluid come out clean...but still no guarantee.

Ill keep an eye on this thread. Unfortunately...i have history with several burned up auto trans...and one catostrophic failure where the lower planetary gearset grenaded. That one was ugly.

Thanks. My brother is bringing a washer over to clean it off before we fill and check the leak. I'll keep all this in mind. Problem is I just finished rebuilding the engine head so I'm low on funds for a new/used tranny.

Here is the trans cooler flush I used to use. Dont spray it without being connected...it shoots out like wasp spray!

Can u drive a stick. If so I'd suggest swapping it. You can pick up a set of pedals really cheap as well as everything else. I'd say half of us yotatech guys probably got everything you need. And it's not hard to do. Keep us posted.

Yes I can. But converting cost money too. Does the bolt pattern on the crank shaft for an automatic match that of a manual? Because on every other engine I've worked on they don't. And I just rebuilt the to half of the engine

Yes. As far as the nuts and bolts side of a 5spd swap it's just changing parts.

But, figure out your leak first, if it wasn't slipping and still moves under its own power it may still be saveable with some seals and fluid. Don't hold your breath on that one but I've seen stranger things.

Its a bolt in deal. but you would need to spend more for sure.

Cool thing is...with all the auto to manual swaps...an auto trans will be easier to find.

Now...if cash is really really tight. And it is the front pump seal leaking.
and you are willing to chance it...you could replace the seal and give her a go. Depends on if you have more time than monet kinda thing.

Times in my life where I would have had no choice but to try the very same thing.
