86 Long Bed 2wd parking brake cables needed

Hello,

Any idea what the part # is for a rear (left and right) parking brake cable for a 86 2wd long bed pickup, or where to get them? Tried searching the forum and googling.....but without luck!

The cable is currently patched together by the PO and I finally want to sort it out properly (discovered when I installed a new front cable a few months back).

Thanks,
Julian

Pull your model# off the metal plate on the firewall. The production date is stamped on ther plate in the driver's door jam. You'll need both.
go to EPC-data.com. Select "Toyota"
Then select “Toyota USA” (i think it defaults to "toyota Japan")
then pick “4Runner”. I know I know, but pick it anyway
now you’ll see a list of the first five characters of a bunch of model #'s. Yours is most likely RN55L. Pick the one that matches your firewall plate.
now go to the Parking Brake box and click that.

Thanks Jimkola.....great resource that is.

I believe I found the correct cables--listed that is. But I am still having trouble sourcing the parts....the part numbers may be discontinued.

Does anyone know the length of a long bed single cab pickup parking brake cable---or where to get one??

Julian

Hi Jimkola,

Info below. I guess I am concerned that these might be short bed cables before I spend a lot on them. If anyone knew the correct lengths of the long bed right and left cables I could compare them to these.

Appreciate your time!
Julian

RN55L-MRA (86 Toyota pickup 2wd, standard cab, long bed)
cable 2 - 46420 https://toyota-usa.epc-data.com/4run...is/4601/46420/
cable 3 - 46430 https://toyota-usa.epc-data.com/4run...is/4601/46430/

No, you did it right. RN55 is the long bed, RN50 is the short.
Question. If you zipped out the old cable from the sheath could you simply slide in new cable, and put barrel ends on ? or is the sheath messed up, too?

I've got a long bed. I need to replace fuel lines tomorrow. I'll measure my cables for you. Will post tomorrow.

prcntoyo--Thanks very much for taking the measurements!

Jimkola---will have to look into that as I don't recall. But, it seems as though you confirm that the part numbers I found via the RN55 link theoretically should then be for the long bed. Great to know that a RN50 is a short bed and RN55 is a long bed. Thanks again! The cables are pricey as seen below:

This is a bit odd, as EPC-data shows discontinued, but ToyotaPartsdeal gives a price. Usually it's reversed.
But either way, if one lists the parts as discontinued this means no one can get anymore. EPC-data.com (Amayama) ships from Japan and UAE, but I tried another USA dealer, McGeorge Toyota. They do list as discontinued .

The cables measure approximately 37".

My experience with ToyotaPartsDeal has been, even though they show a price, I've ordered and then they cancel because the part is discontinued. I have also contacted them to verify a part was available. They say yes. I order and then they cancel because the part is discontinued.

Both are discontinued and not available, even though their site states they are. Does anyone know of any NOS suppliers of parts? I know all kinds for my oddball British cars, but not for the Toyota. Or does someone custom make brake cables that you know of (with the proper ends)??

Back when these trucks were everywhere and still fairly new-ish, we did front parking brake cables(46410-xxxxx) on trucks pretty often, at least often enough to stock. The two rear cables(46420/46430)were rarely in need of replacement. So dealers never intentionally stocked those; special-order only.

So the possibility of a dealership parts dept having one of these laying around is virtually nil. Dealer inventory software will monitor rate of travel on a part, and anything not moving X amount over X period of time will either be returned to the Toyota Depot, or scrapped(yes, literally the dumpster). Having dead/obsolete inventory on hand reflects poorly on the parts manager.
I'd explore aftermarket options. I gotta think there's still a few out there.
If that doesn't pan out, you could very well score a decent set off a used 1984-1988 RN55. They roll through the pick a part yards pretty often

Jimkola--thanks again.

I remembered buying a couple of small trim parts and rear light lenses new when I bought the truck 5 or 6 years ago from some place in Thailand via ebay! Perfect fit and quick shipping. I found this place that says they have them in stock.....

Toyota Hilux RN55 Parking Brake & Cable | YoshiParts

Will call them next week.....ever used them???

I don't know Yoshiparts.
They might be able to source the part, but they won't be oem. Once Toyota of Japan (TMC) discontinues a part it's much like the emergency room doctor pulling the sheet over the patient's head. It's final. And every Toyota entity (Toyota USA, Toyota of Canada, Toyota UAE, etc) all answer to TMC. So it's not like they're discontinued in the USA but still available on another continenent.
Not crazy about Yoshi's shipping charges policy. Amayama much more transparent

Will post results when I call them. I'll do that one morning before work this week....scratch that....one night as I checked what time it is there now! As long as it's the right fit, oem is not necessary. Fingers crossed....

So I contacted yoshiparts as, if they send you the wrong item based upon their recommendation, then it can be returned at no cost. Otherwise, you cannot send it back at all!

I emailed them my VIN and model number (RN55L-MRA) along with the parts codes I came up with, which were found on this page (parts : 46430-35200 and 46420-35230)
https://yoshiparts.com/parts/car/toy...4360&ref=46430

They replied and stated they added the "correct" parts to my cart, which were found on this page (their parts recommended were 46430-35170 and 46420-35201):
https://yoshiparts.com/parts/toyota-4643035170

Note that the page on which their recommended parts were found states the parts are for a Hilux YN57 4th generation, not exactly what I submitted to them (although the year range matches).

Does anyone think they are correct in their recommendation and that I should order them (again, they supposedly can be returned as they told me what to purchase based on VIN and model number provided AND the emphasis on LONG BED I made!).

Thanks,
Julian

I agree with the part numbers Yoshi recommended. Those match the ones I pulled up on EPC-data.com. Out of curiosity, i tried looking up part numbers using Yoshi's site and got the same part numbers you did. Maybe best to look up on EPC-data, then shop around

YN is vehicle not shipped to the USA. Looks a lot like a RN, so maybe just a different engine.
