86 4x4 build w/lots of pictures

Bought this 86 on the verge of collapse. Really rough! The frame was really the only thing that was surviving. Most everything else had to be replaced. I decided the truck was worthy enough to restore and make a decent trail/backcountry/mild crawler rig. I had to fab in endless metal to the body and lots of filler and finally epoxy primer and single stage 460 Toyota Dune Biege Satin. The engine was seized as was the tranny. Bought a complete longblock from General Machine with a crawler cam and a few minor upgrades. The transmission came out of a wrecked 88 with only 80k on it! So that worked out well. LC header, I painted the engine bay the lighter stock toyota color and at that point decided I would paint the rig a Satin Dune Beige 460 code color. The lighter yellow stock color was too much for me.
I had an 85 straight axle in good shape and I decided to do a SAS on this rig. Standard IFS Eliminator kit. The diffs are V6 re-geared to 4.88 with an open front and a Detroit in the rear. New rear OME leafs and Billstiens all around. Trail Gear 2.28 crawl box, TG skit plate and Tom Woods shafts front and back. Front and rear bumpers I built and the tire carrier is from 4x4 Innovations mounted to my bumper. Retroed in an AC system from a couple of earlier trucks. Blows cold! Softtopper for a cover and the bed boxes I fabbed up to carry my extra junk. Seats are out of a later 4 runner and covers are from Shear Comfort (military camo). MMOREflat five six onboard air, ham radio, inclinometer, half ass stereo, PIAA led lights and a few other goodies here and there. The truck has roughly a 3" lift. Priority on the list of things I need are 33 Super Swamper TSL's all around and a cargo rack for the top rear disk break conversion and likely hydro assist at some point.
The PO put a 14 gallon tank in it for some reason and that wouldn't work so I found a 19 gallon and swapped that in with a new Denso pump.
The trucks handles really well on and offroad and is breaking in good.

I've got an 86 Long bed x-cab also that I've been restoring and converting also. Mine started out as a 2wd though. Nice work

I picked up a donor 86 extended cab 2wd and pilfered a lot of interior parts off it. The boot was one of them. Tricky getting the carpet cut just right

It sounds like you put a lot of work into restoring your 86 4x4, and it turned out great! I love the Dune Beige Satin color, and the aftermarket parts you chose give it a really aggressive look. I'm particularly impressed with the SAS conversion and the Detroit in the rear. Those upgrades will make your truck a serious off-road performer.
Spoiler
