86 4runner shifting problems.

recently my 4runner has been acting up and not wanting to shift. The first few shifts are fine but then the last shift doesn't always go, so the rpms just shoot up and turn the motor harder when on the gas. Also occasionally there is a high pitched screach when accelerating and not shifting, any help wood be appreciated its an 1986 4runner, with an automatic tranny.

how does the fluid look? it sounds like your clutches/bands are worn for OD.

You might be able to adjust the detent cable (goes from the throttle to the transmission) and get the pressure up in the trans and get it to shift but more than likely the trans is on its way out.

The screech is probably a v-belt slipping.
