86 22RE spun rod bearing

So today a friend and I pulled the engine out of my nephew's recently acquired 86 pickup since he had spun a rod bearing. Yippee! Well, we got it out after about four hours of leisurely wrenching. Not too bad for a couple of shade tree mechanics.

Got her on the stand and pulled the valve cover and timing chain. We were greeted by a brand new timing set. Sweet!
We then proceeded to pull the oil pan. What we found was not too surprising. Silver dust in the oil. mmmmm yummy. The bad part was finding chunks of the old timing chain guide and tensioner. I wonder why that bearing went dry? Anyway it is obvious that the PO did not drop the pan and clean all the crap out of it when he replaced the timing set. Lazy b*****d.

So it looks like I'll be pulling the head and replacing the crank, connecting rods and bearings. Everything else looks pretty good with very little wear. I will be checking the head out and making sure the valves and seals are in good shape.
Let me know if there is anything else you all think I should pay close attention to.

FYI I bought a crank and a set of rods from these guys: http://www.japanengine.com/ . You can also find them on ebay as well. Good guys to deal with and your not gonna find a better price. Everything plastigauged perfect on mine.

Let me guess it was #4 rod bearing?

I wonder how long after the timing chain was replaced the rod bearing went. Maybe the oil pump was not installed properly or primed good and that helped an already wore out bearing? Could be anything really though, but if I were in your shoes I would replace that oil pump just to be sure.

I will probably do that since the repair is on his dime. Might as well do it right.

make sure you get that block hot tanked as well, there's probably alot of bearing material in the oil passages that your not gonna get out just blowing them out. Don't forget to remove and install all of the oil galley plugs either. I made that mistake and had to basically rebuild the motor twice. Toasted a new crank and my old cut rods because I left it to the machine shop to put all of them back in and well..... Of course I didn't notice it because my 87 did not have the oil pressure gauge just an idiot light. By the time the oil light came on after about 5 minutes of running at 3,500 RPM well lets just say when I shut it off to check some things the thing seized right up on the next start.

So I checked out that japanengines place you sent me to. The prices look great. How is the quality of the components? Are the gasket sets any good? I definitely don't want to pull this engine a second time.

the crank shipped in a coating to prevent rust on it and the rods were god as well. Everything measured perfect.

I cannot say for sure, so you might want to check with them, but I want to say the gasket kits are rock but cannot remember. I got the rest of the rebuild stuff from engnbldr.com. Only the crank and rods came from them.

If you do go with them on the crank, make sure you clean the coating off with mineral spirits before you install it.
