Well when the engine is running it supose to maintain a certain oil pressure all the time. I mean the oil pump is going to wear out over time gears will wither away and cause low oil pressure..... Personally I've never seen oil pressure drop at a steady highway speed and i'm the kind of guy who watches gauges all the time. I took a 1000 miles round trip with my 22re and never saw oil pressure drop at all on the highway going 70 the entire way. Onyly time it drops is at idle which it should. After a certain rpm the oil pump can only put out so much... its just like your engines power out put it can only do so much until its just going as hard and as fast as it can. 22re makes just about all its power at 3500-4k rpms. You keep spinning at 5k is pointless and wasteful cause your already at peak. and thats with any engine.

That makes sense which is why I question the pump at this point.

My old 87 4Runner would show oil pressure loss after extended driving periods I just assumed it was a tired oil pump. And I am a guy who pays attention to gauges as well

Me too! I look at the gauges probably every 3 or 4 minutes on a run.

Well Technically speaking that should not happen. Oil pressure is supose to stay "Right there" all the time. I mean what kinds of extended periods we talkin? At cold start your oil pressure is going to be pretty high due to the fact its thick as tar from cold. But once it reaches operating temp it should lower to its proper pressure.

This was during cross country drives from california to massachusetts. I would notice that the pressure would drop a little, although it was always above the 1/4 mark if I remember correctly

I know on most 22re's the oil pressure is supose be alittle bit bellow the middle mark at all times. If it drops a little its prob not a huge deal as long as it doesn't go bellow the second to last tick mark. Wow your driving that far.... thats pretty crazy. Going that far your oil is prob thinning out a bit and you prob finding yourself changing oil alot i'm guessing....

In one summer in my old 87 4Runner with 200K miles I drove- California to Texas and back, then California to Mass and back then California to Montana and back and it took it going 70 the whole way. I had mud terrains on it and it was tired but it did it.

The 22re engine makes peak hp at 4800rpm. 5k is nothing on any oil.

We run street bike engines in some of our race cars that rev at 15k on 10w30 oil. They rev from 7k-15k for about a half hour no problem.

If you look at cup cars they run 7k-9k rpm at the bigger tracks for 3 hours straight with out a problem.

There's nothing wrong with running 5000rpms for an extended amount of time from an oil standpoint. Oil is not an issue

At 5k rpms heat a friction become an issue beyond oil capabilities..... the stock valve train is not designed for speeds higher than 5k rpms.....
