i was just follow some instructions on some mopar site. i have not read where people used just a couple of coats. that is why i started on my hood, to perfect it before jumping in on the rest of it. i'll sand it down in the morning and buff what i have. yours looks good. thanks for you input.

Sounds like a good candidate for a $50 paint job to me...

i give up. i don't care how thin you mix the paint, it will not level out. I sanded the hood down with 80 grit, 150 grit and then wet sanded with 400 grit, then put on a coat. the end results, well, i still ended up with a slight texture to the paint. i tried blowing the little air bubbles out, but it just seems to stay slightly raised. you have to do a lot of sanding to smooth it out. so i am going to order some boat paint and give it a shot.

I have never tried or seen the roll on paint but i just read where a guy used to of the foam rollers one to roll the paint on with and a dry foam roller to go back over it to level it out. maybe try that ?

i was looking through the thread on ttora about the interlux...i would be willing to try that out. i think the rustoleum looks pretty good for what it is too, but those results from the interlux look absolutely amazing. anyone have any idea how long the paint is good for? is it gonna be tough to get off later when it starts fading, scratching and peeling?

the rustoleum did ok. the shine was ok, and from 5 feet away looks ok. i can say that even with a sander it took a while to get the first four coats smooth. the last coat i did this morning did level out better, but i am going to order some interlux tomorrow and try it next weekend.

How does a $50 paintjob look after a few years? Does it hold up to the elelments or do you have to invest $50 and the time every few years or so?

my guess, every couple of years. upside, it is very fast with very little prep. i have everything it takes to spray, in fact i will spray my civic this fall. my 4runner is not worth the effort of spraying.
a fellow on the mopar site said his car is fine. a couple of years with no fade or clear coat, just wax and buff.

If you have everything to spray it then i would do that, considering the amount of time and labor it has taken to just do the hood.

On a car I was really going to keep and drive for a long time I'll pay somebody to do the full job but really my 4Runner's paint is still in exceptional condition with no signs of issues. New paint is much improved over factory paint from the '80s and into the mid '90s. Paint has come along ways in the last 10 years. We can paint plastic much better and it stays put.

Are you sure you're supposed to be using acetone to thin it out?

Seems like that's too strong of a chemical to be using and as you know it evapoatres way too quickly. I bet that's half of your problem. You need a better thinner...

time spent with prep, and painting, 3 hours. that also includes the major sanding after the 4th coat.

i used acetone because that is the base in the paint.

this 4runner just is not worth a spray job.

i just wanted a little shine, and something to cover up the bondo. I might end up doing a spray job, but the boat paint will be here in a couple of days.

i think i will try some o.m.s. in the paint tomorrow, just for the heck of and see it it levels out better

for some reasons my last coat mixed up like water, was very level this morning. you can still see some texture, but wet sanding would take out alot of it. i was going to try and mix the paint with some o.m.s. today , but it is 104 degrees outside and i just don't feel like melting.

i should have the interlux boat paint by friday. i hope.
