5.29s and 31s for a DD?

i have a couple leads on 5.29 front ifs thirds.. i'm thinking of throwing 5.29s on my 89 that will be a DD... will 3.0 + auto + 31's (and i have ZERO plans to change to larger tires, lifts, etc) and 5.29s be too high?? I know everyone says to run 5.29s with 35s or larger (and i am on my big runner) but i also know how much people bitch about the auto tranny is such a dog behind the 3.0...

i'd like to hear from people with 3.0 + auto + 31's who are running either 4.88s or 5.39s... if you have 4.88 would you change to 5.29s or vice-versa. according to the axle code on the truck it has 4.10s right now.

On my second gen (auto) with 31's and stock 4.88's, I could see how 5.29's could be okay. Although, they are a little heavier than the first gen.

I say, throw in a LS1, with 29's and 5.71's, lol.

Defantly do it! The autotragic has a tall enough O/D to cruise fine.

well my personal experience. my truck has a 3.0 and auto. having 4.88's and 31's i ran 3000 rpms at 70mph. 2500 rpms at 60mph and 2000rpms at 50mph. i don't think i would have wanted any higher gears being as it was and still is a DD. i have 33's now and its not bad.

Thread hi-jack:
I found a good deal on 4.88s for the fronts and rears of my truck, and want to get them since I'm gonna have the diff open for the Aussie install anyway
But I dont have any money left for some 33s
What would it be like driving 30s with 4.88s for the next few months?

ZUK the gear master runs 5.71's and 31's on an auto on his DD and swears by it. 5.29's should be fine as log as you dont put in a 5spd....

i know you are trying to keep this on the cheap side, but i completed my 5spd swap for around $700 and i think it was completely worth it. better mileage, more fun, and its that much cooler

when mine was bone ass stock with 4.88's and 31's, 3.0 auto i was getting 20mpg on the highway, cant remember the rpm's though...33's+4.88's+auto=death. couldnt keep speed going downhill or get better than 12mpg. hope this helps. I think 5.29's should be alright.

thread jack

Ive got 22R 4 speed 31s and stock 4.10...

I have a set of 5.29s in storage and a 5 speed also I plan on getting some 33s or maybe 35 if I can find a great deal but I am getting anxious to install them... so I guess my question is will 5.29s+5 speed+31s= to high of RPM/doom?

I dd the truck back and forth to work never more than 45mph and wheel the truck in summer

you will have very quick acceleration. I did in on my old '84 and it was running way too high RPM's on the freeway..

...571 and 33x10.50 tires on my 87 Runner wit auto with 22RE and I liked it.

I also had 529's with 31 inch tires on my 88 Runner with auto and 3.0 engine and that was a winning combo.

Seems the automatic is geared pretty well if you run a higher R&P ratio then stock. I guess toyota messed that one up

Who the heck wants to cruise in their 4runner at 90mph anyways?

You will be fine with 5.29's with a auto.
