I have a 1989 V6 runner that the 4x4 isnt engaging. Its a auto tranny. Is it possible that my stock lockers have worn out that my 4x4 wont engage because of them not locking? Hope someone can help me figure this out or give me some tips? Thanks

Is it a 1st or 2nd gen 4runner? Lots of people call their '90 2nd gens '89 since they were built in '89. Why I ask is because the 2nd gens came factory with the ADD, not manual locking hubs. This is a common problem area.
If its a 1st gen with manual locking hubs, the hubs may need to be serviced. How can you tell its not engaging? No 4wd light in the dash? Actually looked under the vehicle to see if things are spinning?

Its a 1st gen with the removeable top, it has manual locking hubs.

The light on the dash is coming on, We took a look under the runner and everything was spinning like it should or at least i think every was spinning like it should, no funny nosies were coming from the t case.

If the hubs are engaging, and the cv axles are rotating, but its still not going into 4wd, what does that leave?

Transfercase.

Or maybe you have no front driveshaft

well if the cvs are spinning, then that eliminates the hubs. Then you move on to the t-case.

What do you mean by "stock lockers"

Yes i put it in 4Hi and 4 low,

What I mean by stock is the ones that came from the factory OEM

no... if he's putting it in 4wd, and everything is rotating CVs and drives but still now power to the ground.. that leaves hubs. I bet the locking hub needs to be rebuilt... its what i had to do with Scuba's old truck at pismo



and there is a big difference between locking hubs and Lockers.

Tofer thats exactly what its doing everything spins just not putting power to the ground...

If it was the T-case wouldn't it make noises or grinding noise.


I didnt know there was a difference but your right there is a big diff. mine are locking hubs.

Ok Im going to do that is there any thing in particular or out of the ordianry that I should watch out for

nope pretty straight forward... 6 bolts holding the dial on.. that *may* be as far deep as you need to go. make sure that its clean( not rust) and greased to allow the gear to move in and out (lock /unlock)

Do this first.

Keep Transfer case in 2hi.
Jack up front end.
Lock your free wheel hubs (manual hubs, locking hubs)
Spin one front wheel with your hand. See that side CV shaft turning?
Yes--- Then no problem with that side manual hub. No-- Something is wrong with that manual hub.
Repeat with the other side.

My guess is one of the hubs is not locking itself in leaving that CV spinning as the path to least resistance. Meaning you won't get power to the front end.

There are PLENTY of manual hub rebuild threads and walk throughs with pictures. Just search here and

Good call Scuba that's the easiest way to trouble shoot. The manual hubs need greased every so often...ask scuba how he knows

I descibed that really bad. Your right chris. When i tested my hubs i jacked my rig up so i could see if they were locking.
But it makes sense how if he was on the ground, cvs spinning, but still no 4wd, that it would be the hubs.

We were looking at it 2 different ways

A piece inside one of my hubs was actually broken and bent. So turning the dial did not turn the mechanism inside..

I found out my problem was on the passenger side manual hub...

what was wrong with the hub, bc I may be having the same problem with my 4wd
