My 87 4Runner won't shift into 4wd do to a broken part. I'm not sure what the part is called. I also have no idea how it came out. I recently replaced the trans mount and engine mounts.i hope that didn't have something to do with it. I had to put a ratchet strap to get the trans mount to line up. It also could have came out hen I jacked the tranny up. Do I just put it back in or is it toast. Also the boot is torn. Thanks.

That's a new one for me too. I don't know what you've got going on there or why. But I bet you can put it back together and have it work again. Since it looks like it's just some sort of pivot point for the transfer case shifter linkage. I doubt it's held in there very tightly. Plug it back in and put the boot back over it.

 

The reason you've never seen it is probably cause it's an auto. I'm working on getting the parts together for a 5 speed swap. I just blew a damn violent hose under the ego as well. Oh well.i am in CA and I'm not sure of its origins.

 

has anyone figured out what that part is yet? i need to know as well im about to just take pictures to the stealership so they can figure it out

 

I was too curious not to go dig through my spare parts and find out. I have an auto transmission out of an 88 4Runner out back. I found that piece of linkage and put it back up in place and it's the weirdest linkage design I've ever seen. I'll post some pics and try to explain how it works in a few.

 

My truck doesn't have an auto transmission but I have one in my spare parts inventory. I'm not too familiar with how the linkage all works but I think I pieced it back together how it went.

If you look at the pictures you will see that the little free floating ball joint that is bolted to the case serves as the lower pivot point of the assembly. There is an upper joint that swivels as well and is mounted above the case. Your selector stick moves the point on the upper part that my finger is pointing at. The half moon assembly then rotates on the upper and lower joint which pushes a rod forward that shifts the transfer case on the driver's side as the transfer case. I guess that is the only way they could find to get to the opposite side of the case and shift it using only straight connecting rods.

Ingenious or overthought? I don't know but that kind of engineering is what I love most about these trucks. The one in the pictures is just dirty. It actually feels as smooth as you can imagine and the bots are even good after 26 years. I'd be willing to part with that transmission and linkage, by the way, if anybody needs it.
