I have an 88 4runner with the 22re. I was driving around this morning and first symptom of a problem was when shifting the truck it would idle rough and bog down a little then ran fine. Shorty after that it did the same thing but then lost all power going up hill. I limped it home, it seemed to run ok between 1000-3000 rpm but would die out otherwise. It will fire up and run... barely so i'm assuming it's not fuel related. I did a quick search but didnt come up with anything and i havent really had a chance to look at it because im in the middle of some other projects right now. I don't know if anyone might have any suggestions what to check first or what my problem might be. Any insight would be appreciated.

 

Might want to check the EGR valve to make sure it is not stuck open.

 

Im having the same symptoms it seems.

i have an 87, 4x4 and its starting fine, but seems to flare up to 2500 rpm, then starts to idle down, and just wont stop going down... then it hits 500, and violently shakes and stalls.

when shifting gears its hesitant, stumbles and it feels like something is sticking.

 

I went through changed the plugs, cleaned the egr, put some fuel cleaner in the system and topped off the tank and just went out and ran it hard and its been running good since.
