4Runner Roof Leaks!
I have a 1987 Toyota 4Runner I bought over the summer and now I found that the top leaks. I moved the top back and cleaned the gasket and the lip where the gasket goes and it isn't leaking as bad, but when I took it through a car wash it was like someone turned on a faucet. Is there something else that goes above the rubber seal? Everyone so far has told me that it only has one piece of rubber.
I have some heavy duty 3M reflective tape that is 4 inches wide, I am thinking of laying a strip across the roof-to-cab. It's black (same color as my 4Runner), but reflects white at night.
I don't plan on removing the top anytime soon.

Fiberglass Top Leaking!
Hey man,
I posted this issue a few weeks ago and I never got an answer from anyone. Doesn't anyone work on their own rigs anymore?
My deal is, I bought my first 4Runner (I have Toyota pickups, just not a 4Runner) at the end of this past summer. It's been raining like hell here in Yuma, AZ and I have a leaking issue with the top.
It has the rubber gasket that goes between the cab and the top, but the water is coming in from the holes above the mounting bolts that go to the cab.
Can anyone tell me if their 4Runner does the same, and can anyone give me an idea how to fix it?
I was thinking of putting some silicon in the holes, or stuffing some ear plugs into the holes.

Merged the two.
a thread please don't start another.
Just leaks around the cab to top 4 holes? Anywhere else? I've had half a dozen and never an ounce of a leak. Sounds like a bad seal on the cab, the top or both.

I suspected something was missing because the holes lead straight up and out the gap between the top and the cab.
Is this the seal (mentioned by "InternetRoadkill") sold at the dealer for $40.00?

Didn't know there was one.
I started with the top-to-cab bolts, then did the sides.
Also, just returned from the Toyota dealer, and he said there is only one seal shown in the parts manual (65888). (Here's a copy of the image from the manual.)

sorry man, i haven't been around since you posted, but it looks like you got all your answers already. as illustrated, the cap has one black rubber seal on it that keeps the weather out. if your cap doesn't have it, you need it. there is also a specific sequence to putting the bolts in. you put a couple in, put another pair in, remove the first pair, put in the rest, than retighten the first pair. it sounds absurd, but i figure it must be for a reason to be so specific. it's in the owner's manual but you can probably google search '4runner cap sequence' or similar.
if you bought the gasket from the stealer already, so be it. but if not, any waterproof, closed cell foam or rubber self adhesive gasket strip will work that's about 1/2" thick. wipe the surface with denatured alcohol first then press it on.
check the fiberglass top for punctures as well. my roof leaks cuz it's got a crack in it. some jackarse poked their finger in it while asking me "does this leak?" and i said "it probably does now" i'll reglass it someday.

Probably find something that would work at a good hardware store, look in the weatherstrip section. Or might try an RV or camper place for a cab-shell seal strip.

Ditto on the bolt sequence. ¡Es muy importante!
That's good to hear that a new seal is still available for the 4R top. Toyota seems to keep seals available for a LONG time. A couple of years ago, I bought some new door and window seals for my Celica from the dealer in CA and it's 33 yrs old!

So I know this thread is old, but this part has been discontinued as of 05-20-2015 when I tried to find it. Part number 65888-89102 . Please post if you have a workaround or a good brand of weatherstrip that works well.
