It is not so much getting the steering box but the front wheels straight

This is where a Front end rack is nice.

Do not use a "pickle fork."

It's the mark of an amateur, and as harleyman711 says (I think) it will damage the boot. Heck, it will damage everything it touches.
Just use the right tool. http://www.harborfreight.com/tie-rod...ller-1752.html (multiple sizes available).

I usually back the castle nut off to the end of the TR or ball joint bolt and beat it a few times until it pops off (or better yet use a solid nut with the same pattern). The tricky part is usually getting the nut free if it's seized up without spinning the whole ball assembly in place and getting nowhere. For that part I haven't found anything that works other than a pickle fork to put tension on the bolt. Other ideas? Yes, pickle fork almost always rips the boots.

I guess you all can call me amateur I always use a pickle fork because if those parts come off new ones go on. I am not worried about damaging a rubber boot in something getting thrown out.

Although the torch is always my first option !!!

That does not mean I don`t have the pullers

After a test run of a few miles getting a feel for where the steering wheel wants to be.

The way I line the steering wheel up is get the front wheels straight .

Pop the steering wheel off put it on as close to straight as possible.

Put the steering wheel back on take it for a ride.

Doing this only if it is really off .

It is the only way I have ever done it If there is a better way outside a front end rack I am willing to learn
