4 wheel drive issues
I have a 1988 3.0 4Runner manual tranny & auto hubs (not ADD). When I shift to 4-high or 4-lo, the 4wd light comes on but the front wheels don't engage. The both front wheels spin freely when in 4wd. If the 4wd light comes on does that mean that the transfer case is working properly? I've read that the springs in the auto hubs often break but I just want to make sure it's not a bigger issue. I already have Aisin hubs to put in. How can I check if the transfer case is working properly? I've searched these forums but couldn't find any answers. Thanks in advance.

Jack up the rear, put it in 4wd and let the rear tires spin. Have someone look at the front cv's. if they (or at least one) are spinning, the t-case is working and the auto hubs are the culprit.

haven't checked the CV's but i verified that the front drive shaft does spin when in 4wd (whew!). hopefully it's the auto hubs and not the front diff, though i'm pretty sure 9 times out of 10 the auto hubs will crap out long before the front diff. thanks for the response.

check this out:

this should help in getting your aisins rebuilt correctly, as for the spindle nut conversion, im not sure. keep us posted.

here's the site i referenced for the auto to manual hub conversion. the example uses warn hubs but if you want you can use Aisin's instead. 4x4wire as the exact same documentation verbatim.
