4 low slow to engage untill 2500 rpms

I have a 95 4runner v6 4x4 and when put in 4 low it seems it doesn't kick in until 2500 rpms. It feels like a tranny slipping but 2wd and 4high work fine. 4high has a small vibration. What could this be. At 2500rpms it kicks quick then goes.

Lol mine does the same thing, I've been looking into it and it seems its supposed to do that. This is my first 4x4 and I thought something was wrong with low 4 . They say using it on pavement is a bad idea. That's what I was on when I tried it. I haven't taken it off road yet to play with it again. Hopefully no one chimes in and says you guys are tards and 4 low is bad. Lol. Everything else is good , 4 hi and 2 high work fine. Ill be interested to see what other folks say.

I have the same issue with my 95 4runner automatic. I rarely ever use 4 low, so when I first engaged it this winter it slipped at first. I drove in 4hi for awhile then tried again... 2nd time it quickly shifted through 1st & 2nd gear, but was winding out third (4000rpm) and never shift into 4th. Like others, 2wd is fine and 4hi is fine. I use 4 low so infrequently that I wasn't really that concerned....plus my 4runner has almost 240K.....But I would love to know if this is the beginning of tranny problems?....

Yep same thing, we need someone with a good amount of experience to tell us more about what's going on. I was thinking about calling one of these crappy car lots on craigslist and test driving one similar to mine and see if it does it too.

Funny! Ashamed to admit it since I've have had my 4runner for 13 years....but I had to find my owners manual so I could check if it was supposed to shift out of 3rd gear when driving in 4low.

http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/4R_TechInfo.shtml
http://www.marlincrawler.com/java/getratio_calc.html
http://www.marlincrawler.com/java/getspd_calc.html

So with 2.80(first gear a/t)
2.28(Tcase low range)

4.3(diff w/ 28" tire), crawl ratio = ~27.4/1 .. 2500rpm = ~7.7 mph
4.88(diff w/ 31"), crawl ratio = ~31.1/1 .. 2500rpm = ~7.4mph

Shift schedule are here

Maximum speed for tcase L4, tranny L, 14mph ~4700rpm.
tranny 2, 26mph ~4200rpm

Thanks. Links have some great info. Interesting...so when I shift in Low4 on an A340 4 spd automatic, then it will not go into 4th gear because 4th gear is actually overdrive which is disabled in Low4........am I understanding that correctly?

Yep you read that right..

From the owners manual
If the engine coolant temperature is low or
when the front drive control lever is in “L4”
(low-speed position, four-wheel drive)
the transmission will not shift into the
overdrive gear even with the overdrive
switch on.

Also note for those that didn't read it.

It says to drive atleast 10miles every month with the 4wd enabled to keep the lube in the right places.

Could be. Use the above links to figure out what speed you should be moving at for a given rpm, idle for example, and confirm you speedo' matchs gps (maybe?).

There is of course a whole transmission troubleshooting flow chart and test proceedures in the FSM.

Thing is it takes much less torque in the l4-L to get moving compared to h4-l, that is the whole point of gearing low, so I don't expect its slip just normal. It's not ment for going fast it's ment for pulling on sloppy, sandy, snowy, rocky stuff, thats why it's called "crawling gear".

Good luck sir! If you decide to go thru the tranny tests let us know what you decide or come up with!

There's a shift solenoid in the transfer case which controls the HI=LO ranges. The solenoids are known trouble makers in the 340H. Not sure if yours has a 340H in it.

I have an upstream before cat but non after cat there is the plug there for one but nothing connected but no where on pipe for it. I am getting terrible gas mileage right now and check engine light is on but no one seems to be able to read an obd1. I wonder if when he replaced the exhaust he didn't fit the one after the cat on there.

Identify the transmission type first, it is located on the door placard. "A/TM xxx/yyy" yyy is the transmission type.

FSM autotrans link, has inspections tests and diagnostics information.
