I am ordering a set of 235-85-r16's to run on my Taco wheels, will 4.88 gears be too low for highway use?? The tire diameter works out to just shy of a 32" tire. I know 31's run 4.56's and 4.88's generally go with 33's, am I going to lose a bunch of driveability?

Has anyone actually run this setup??

My truck has a fiberglass camper shell and often I carry tools, highlift, 2 spares, extra water, etc. I do pull a 14' aluminum with a Honda 90 on occasion, and I do live at 7,000' elevation. In the future my truck will most likely get heavier with sliders, bumpers, etc as well...

My concern is to not be revving too high on the interstates.

You got a manual tranny? You should be fine with those tires and gears.

I've run the math on those gears a ton of times and that size tire shouldn't give you any problems.

I'm just under 3300 rpm at 75 according to an online gearing calculator, which would be the fastest you can drive around here anyways, on the interstate. That would be a gain of 200 rpm from my current setup with 4.10's & LT235-75r15's. It will be a bit of a dog until I get the gears done, but I already have a 4.88 diff sitting in my garage, just need to get a 4.88 rear third...

Well, I have always looked at it this way. You will get nice acceleration, and well its a truck. It ain't gonna be fast on the hwy. As long as it gets you there fairly quick

low gearing is so much fun in the city and off road Its also nice to have grunt to pass somebody on the hwy.

keep in mind fuel economy depends on TWO things:
RPM's and how far you press the pedal.
If you can keep your speed without pressing much on the pedal, you're doing well.
Also, keep in mind that many people choose gears so they have power when they need it. That doesn't mean that power=mileage though.
Overall, the least amount of throttle required to maintain your speed is the best you can do to save money.
