3vze winter starting problem.

My 1994 3vze won't start. It turns over but will not fire up. I checked diagnostics and it blinks I_II. I think this is code 12.

I remember having the same problem last winter, but it went away. It's back this winter. Anyone have this similar issue when it's cold out? Where should I look to diagnose the problem and possible part to replace?

Thanks for any assistance and Happy New Year!

I read that code 12 is pointing to the distributor and/or the starter switch. I need to know what should be checked on the distributor and on the starter switch. A new distributor is expensive. Maybe the cap and rotor needs to be replaced. I also need to find and test the starter switch or replace it.

Any one know what steps I should take with the distributor and starter switch?
I would like to address these issues with your help.

Thanks for any sharing of experience and knowledge.

I have a similar issue with a 95 22RE. I think my problem is with the cold start injector and/or timer switch. The engine only kicks on the initial crank. After several attempts it eventually starts. I haven't confirmed it yet but I intend to test the timer switch per the shop manual.

I had trouble this winter starting mine. I bought some quick start and sprayed it in the throttle body to get it to turn over. Once it started running it was fine and hasn't happened since. I'm very certain this was due to temperature changes leading to moisture in the fuel line which froze. I've got the 3VZE.

EDIT: I should also mention that I have added some gasline antifreeze to prevent this from happening again.

Code 12 means the ecu isn't receiving the crankshaft or camshaft position signals. http://personal.utulsa.edu/~nathan-b...85diagnosi.pdf

The signal coils are in the distrib, so check the distrib connection. Clean it up if it looks corroded.

If the connector is okay, try to measure the clearance between the signal rotor reluctors and the signal coil projections. Should be 0.2 – 0.4 mm (0.008 – 0.016 in.). If gap is too big, you may need a new distrib - I'm not sure if the signal coil positions can be adjusted like it can on the 22RE.

If the air gaps are okay, check the resistance of the three signal coils per fsm specs. If any are out of spec, you'll need new ones. Again, I'm not sure if you can get the signal coil assembly separate from the distrib - on my 89 you can't, but the 92-95 distrib is a different design. A dealer should know.

Here is a list of several dealers that sell parts at a discount online:
