3vze: Thorley vs Downey headers
Hopefully this question has not been covered before, but I did not find a lot of posts about the Thorley headers for the 3vze (89 4runner). Is there any pro/cons between the Thorley and Downey headers for the v6? I have had my 89 4runner for a long time and can't quite give it up, I think it needs little boost to keep me interested for a few more years until I can buck up for something newer.
Summit quoted me 430.39 non ceramic, 569.95 ceramic coated, this includes the midpipe. I am leaning towards the Thorley ceramics. Any recent opinions on them?
My truck has a catback and Downey old style intake (big oval one).

thorley
I have the ceramic thorley headers. I only have good things to say about them, everyone who has seen them has commented on the build quality and the thickness of the flanges. They have not discolored at all and the design is very nice, no issues with burning through floorboards or other horror stories that I have read about other headers. they're really nice headers.
I had a good experience with Sean Crary at Jardine/Thorley and I bought direct from him (had them dropshipped). If you are in the market for an exhaust I got a superior deal by combining the header purchase with a jardine exhaust. I ended up replacing the 14" muffler as it was too loud for my taste, but the exhaust itself is very nice IMHO.

some of his comments from our email correspondance:
-"I am glad we could make a great product for your Toyota. We spent a long time developing this system".
-"The reason I recommend ceramic is for corrosion resistance and heat
retention. The ceramic will last longest under extreme conditions where
chrome may only last for 5-6 years. The price difference between the two is
only $114.00. Well worth it!"
The part numbers for the 3vze are
1) Thorley v6 header THY-505-C (CERAMIC)
2) Jardine 2 ? cat-back exhaust. DTE-89205
good luck with your choice

Great thanks, how was the price from Thorley/Jardine compared to summit? I have a Borla catback currently, I will probably throw in a Magnaflow cat too. Did you insulate at the firewall and starter?

headers worth it for the 3vze
I am happy enough with this setup that my plans for a 3.4 swap are on hold indefinitely. A very nice setup, IMHO.

I currently have sitting in my driveway a truck with NWOR headers, and a 4runner with downey headers.
Ive seen pics of Thorly headers and its my opionion they are made by the same people that make downey headers.
The mounts for the EGR and reed valves being downey style with the same bends in the down pipes, meaning they will sit as close to the pass side floor board as the downey's.
as for there performance gain, im conviced. If i ever pull another 3vze for either a rebuild or HG, it will never go back with stock manafolds on it.

Headers are a way to appease myself for a couple years. An engine swap would be nice, but I don't have the time or money to drop $3k for a 3.4L swap. Don't think I want to swap it into a truck with 175K anyways. Drop the $500 now, and then save my pennies for a 4dr 6sp Tacoma in a couple years when the price comes down on them.
I figure for $1k:
headers
fiberglass L-trim
rebuild injectors
hi-flow cat
adjust valves
And my rig should be good for years to come.
Already have AOR rock sliders, Bilsteins, Trutrac rear diff, smittybuilt desert skid plate, decent stereo, TRD clutch and flywheel, and engine mods I posted above. Headers are the logical next step in my mind.

Well as a reality check before pulling the injectors and installing headers I did a cold compression test. 170psi +- 2psi on all cylinders, looks like things are good and tight. So I am going to go ahead and do the headers when I get some time.

Why don't you have a look at the LC Engineering headers for the 3vze? There is not just Downey, Thorley & NWOR, Yes LCE makes HEADERS for the 3vze. They are slightly more pricey than the Thorley's & Downey's but they have a strong reptuation for producing high quality products. Check out their website. They are around $600 or so. (they also sell downey headers for the 3vze on their website but look for the LCE ones they make in their parts catalogue, you'll find 'em.
