as in they touch together. you want to drain any stored memory. sometimes, it's a couple seconds or even minutes, but i've seen more and 1/2 hour should do it.

 

I do not think this is a Head gasket issue as the signs of one are coolant loss, milky oil and excessive white smoke out the exhaust pipe.

You do not have to remove your battery terminals to clear you current codes, all you need to do is find the fuse box (long rectangle one parallel to battery) and just pull all the small colored fuses one at a time and put them right back.

For testing for a leaky fuel injector, you may need to find a mechanic who works on Toyota's to check.

 

All you have to do to erase the ECU's memory is pull the EFI fuse for a few minutes. No need to remove battery cables or tape anything together.

 

Don't pull the battery cables, you'll lose all the radio pre-sets. Just pull the EFI fuse for 15 seconds (FSM, EG-171). That will reset the ECU.

 

Didn't fix it.

 

If anyone is interested, I found the source of the surging high idle. Still determining if it fixed the rich condition; I'm going to mark my mpg off this next tank of gas to see.

It was a clogged coolant hose from the intake manifold to the TB, rendering whatever idle control in the TB ineffective. The PO had used green coolant, not changed it (ever?) and the entire cooling system was full of rusty gunk. This particular little hose was the last remnant of that.

After all that headache and money, it was a $.90 hose.

 

The positive aspect is by changing all those parts, you do not need to worry about it now and most of that stuff may have needed to be replaced anyway. The bad it was a hassle.
