3VZE question

A little history.

My timing belt smoked ( posted about it here) and I very carefully replaced it with all new components ( water pump, tensioners, etc) and really had no problem at all. Truck ran pretty good but was a little doggy, had to downshift on the highway etc. After thinking about it for a while I checked the ignition timing, it was about 2 degrees past top dead center. Jumped the terminals and set the timimg properly, it now runs perfectly. Matter of fact, I think it runs better than it ever has.

Now my question, how did the ignition timing get so far off?

Yes it did break, so I suppose that's what happened. In theory it shouldn't move the timing but I guess in real life it can happen.. Thanks.
