i've just replaced the cam seals last week and since then the idle on my truck has been running really high(1500 to 2000) and i can't seem to rule it out. i've torn apart and cleaned my throttle, checked and rechecked my vacuum lines, adjusted my throttle cable and vacuum advance cable. now i'm at a loss as to what else to try. can anyone throw something useful my way?

 

Vacuum leak.

 

get some starter fluid or carb cleaner and spray down all ur vaccum lines while the truck is running and at normal operating temp and if u do have any vaccum leaks the idle will surge from the starter fluid or carb cleaner and then you can go and replace any line or lines that ar leaking. and have you checked the idle screw on the throttle body mine worked loose one time and all it needed was to be screwed back in check those and we will see what you come backwith

 

1.Replace the o-ring on the idle adjustment screw.
2.Check your ignition timing, the more it's avanced the higher your idle will want to be.
3.Check the funtion of your dashpot, adjust if needed.

Just a few things to consider...

 

i'll check the vacuum line with the starter fluid, thats a hell of an idea and i have cleaned and adjusted my dashpot. my timing has been checked twice at my buddies smog shop and it's at 0.01 btdc so i'm not too worried about that. i'm going to probably have to just retrack and check the vac lines. thanks for the advice guys!

 

.01 what? Degrees?

Should be 10 degrees BTDC. That's the stock setting anyway.

BTW, a vac leak would likely lower the idle speed. Not saying you shouldn't recheck the lines and connections. You might find something you overlooked.

My next suggestion is examine the TPS. By which I mean...

1.Remove
2.Disassemble
3.Clean all internal parts thoroughly
4.Make sure the movement is free and smooth, not sticking or hanging up at any point in the entire range
5.Reassemble
6.Reinstall

See if that makes any difference.

 

it ended up being my throttle cable was frayed in the sleeve and my dashpot was cracked. i'm going to go ahead and reeplace all of my vac lines anyway.and it doesn't give me any being set at .01 btdc, it runs smoothh still.

 

That makes sense about the throttle cable and/or cracked dashpot. Glad you got 'er figured.

However....

You've still never explained what you mean by ".01 btdc". If you mean .01 degrees before-top-dead-center, that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Why you ask? Because it would be humanly impossible to get a measurement in an increment that small(I don't care who's doing the measuring). You must be confused, and/or don't know how ignition timing is measured.

Please allow me to explain the basics.

Ignition timing is measured in the degree of angle the crankshaft sits, before or after coming to top-dead-center, on the #1 cylinder when the distributor fires the spark to said cylinder. Hence, a correct measurement will be in the "# of degrees" BTDC(before-top-dead-center) or ATDC(after-top-dead-center). The "# of degrees" will always be in whole numbers(5,8,10,15,etc.)never in decimals(.01,.10,5.1,10.5,etc.), regardless of whether it's BTDC or ATDC.

Anyway, the setting can drastically effect engine performance. If not set advanced(far enough BTDC)at least to the stock position, it will at least cost you some low-end(off-idle)power. Possibly also lowering your mpg, causing excessively rich combustion, or even shortening the life of some of the engines' components(due to excessive carbon build-up from running too rich).
