3vze Engine Knock

Hello Everyone,

I searched the forum but have not seen something similar to mine...

Have a 3vze in my 1991 Toyota SR5 4x4, and I`m getting a knocking sound.

I have drained the oil and there is no metal filings in there. The engine runs well and smooth, but just has a very loud knock to it. It does sound like it is coming from the top end.

I did buy another used 3vze engine as a friend said it sounds like a rod or crank knock, but the oil now says different (at least to me).

It does`t feel like a valve, as I said it runs smooth. I give it a shot of gas, the knocking gets louder, but as it comes down in RPM`s the knocking goes away or lessens.

To me it sounds like a rocker arm. Anyone have such an experience before?

I don`t want to pull the engine only to find it was something simple.

I will have a video up soon as my battery recharges in the camera.

Thanks in advance...

Kevin

The engine has 350,000 km.

What is a CEL?

I will post the video this afternoon.

What do you mean by a knocking sound. Its not more of a ticking sound is it?

Here it is. The knock isn't coming in too well in the sound, you really have to listen.

When I rev the engine, you hear it speed up then go away for a few seconds.

It was windy, so at the first you will hear the wind...

Pull of the spark plug wires one at a time and run the engine
if the knock goes away. Its a rod.

Theory. Without a load on the cylinder with the plug wire off. A rod knock will usually quiet down

ouch!!!!! that is not good....it could me a few things. stuck valve, need of a valve adjustment, or a new engine....those your engine have the some power before the sound started?...I would do a compression test on each cylinder and see what happend. you can rent a compression test tool at your local autozone.

definitely a "knock" - - -

And a pretty bad one, too... Not an injector...Toyota injectors "tick". I'm about 75% sure it's a rod or if not, a rocker arm.

CEL = Check Engine Light

It's gonna need to be torn down and repaired... You might get another couple hundred miles out of it but I'd repair it now before it damages something more expensive. But that engine gave 220K miles so far so it's about due for a rebuild anyway.

Good job with the video w/sound.... it's easier to rule other things out.

The engine runs smoothly, just the knocking noise.

I'm hoping for a rocker arm, but I did buy another engine for $500. Just want to make sure it is the lesser of 2 evils before I invest that much time.

Not to worry... I'm not driving it now.

But I did forget to mention something... when I rev it up very high, it will quit like it is flooded and will not start for about 30 minutes. Then it is fine...

Does rod knock go away when the RPM's go down after you rev it?
