3rd gen wheels on 2nd gen 4runner

I'm new to this forum. I searched quite a bit, but I did have a question. I know that people have had to drill out the center cap on their fronts, but is this only only on 4wd? I have a 1990 2wd 4runner and I just picked up a set of 3rd gen limited, chromed wheels off craigslist. I was hoping I wouldn't have to mess with the chrome caps. BTW, this forum is sweet. Thanks, Greg.

I know the hubs are different sizes on the 4wd between the 2nd & 3rd gen. Nor sure about the 2wd

Thanks for responding

I looked at a couple pics of people selling their 4runners and saw a couple with 3rd gen wheels on 2nd gen with the center caps intact. They were all 2wd. I'm getting some michelin 265 70 16 ltx-ms tires mounted this week. I know this is mostly a 4wd forum, but does anyone have any opinions on the michelins? Thanks for your input, Greg.

The LTX M/S is a street tire. Lasts a long time, but is not good offroad. The LTX A/T is an all-terrain and is great on-road as well as good offroad and still lasts a long time. But, you will have to get a 265/75R16 (32" vs the 31" you are planning to get). My set of LTX A/T's has been on for 66K miles and still have a lot of tread left.

Go to http://www.tirerack.com/ and read the reviews of the tires.

For $189 per tire they better be damn good. I'm on my 2nd set right now and I personally think they are way too easy to spin. I would rather have my BFG ATs any day of the week over my michelins.

Many will disagree with me, but that's what I've observed.

And the Michelin LTX/MS is known as THE best onroad tire you can buy, so wise choice.

255 70 16

I was thinking of putting this size on. The tires are alot cheaper and the overall diameter is 30.2". It's only 1/2 inch smaller than the 265 70 16. Remember, I have a 2wd 4cyl and don't do any off roading. I currently run 265 75 15 and I did notice losing a little off the line and gas mileage went down.

I have the Michelin LTX A/T. I agree they can be easy to spin, but I think that is due to the firmer compound that Michelin uses which in the end run is probably the reason they last so darn long. I think they're pretty good tires for what they are. The only thing that sucks about them in comparsion to other All Terrains like the BFG A/T and the Bridgestone Dueler Revo, is they don't have a winter tire rating. If I lived in a more winter oriented climate where we saw more ice and snow, that alone would push me towards the BFG's or Revo's. Right now currently though I run my LTX A/T's for the better part of the year, and I have a set of Bridgestone Winter Duelers for any up north fishing trips or winter jaunts I may do.

Installed new tires and rims yesterday and am pleased. The size looks perfect and I think I will get a little better gas mileage with these. These will be perfect for me since I live in So. Cal and don't do any off-roading. BTW, the 2000 limited rims fit with no problem on the center caps. I'll post some pics tomorrow.
