3rd and 4th dropped out today (transmission problem)

I've never (before today) had trouble with popping out of gear, or clutch slippage, or anything. On the way home from work, it felt like I missed a shift from 2nd to 3rd, so I just dropped it into 4th as I was going downhill. Well, 4th wasn't there either.

Any ideas if the marlin crawler thing has anything to do with this ?

1st, 2nd, and reverse all work fine. It's like 3rd and 4th are just missing- gone.

thanks for diagnosing, theorizing a fix for this perdicament over the intrewarbler.

ohgood,

It is possible that you have an very badly worn out 4th gear fork that is no longer able to engage 4th gear. Also you may have a worn out center bearing plate that is causing the main shaft to walk into or away from each gear's shift fork causing the gear to self-disengage. This problem does affect 4th gear, as well as 3rd and 2nd in descending order.

When was the last time this transmission was serviced? Did you notice a metallic or shiny surface texture to the old oil? For instance, this is an example of a lot of metal mixed in with oil:

Thanks
Mike

It is the shifter bushing if I am not mistaken.

Our Heavy Duty shift Bushings will not cause a transmission to pop out of gear as described here.

Would you mind reading this reply (#11) and then reply back with your thoughts?

Thanks

if you were refering to item description troubles, it was fine with me.

items arrived yesterday, dropped right in, and firmed up the new-to-me transmission nicely. the MC stickers are sharp, and including the huge one was a nicebonus. t

hanks ! 10/10 service !

Saweeeet! I'm not sure if just the bushings will help this situation or not, so please keep this updated if needed!

Thanks!
