Hi everyone, im new to this forum. I live in Christchurch, New Zealand and would like some advice.

I own a '90 yota surf (2ndgen 4runner to you guys, they're called surfs over here) and have a few mods under way. I'm pulling the old 2LT diesel lump in favor of a 2jz-ge and chucking a solid front axle under at the same time.

Now for the question. I had originally planned on running 35in goodyear MTRs on 15x8 steel rims. The guy helping with all the work suggested i run 37s, and then i got thinking . Basically apart from the added benefits offroad, what effect will these have? What sort of extra stress will the 37s place on diffs/cvs/rest of drive line etc. over the 35's? Also as its a DD will the 37's be much worse on the street for handling? And what will power be like with 5.29 diff ratios? I haven't got longfields or a front locker yet, and I don't wanna break stuff constantly. I already know that I will need to do some to make these fit.

Please shed your thoughts on this, I want 37's but don't know what to expect . Any help would be much appreciated, cheers.

 

Bye bye birfields. I ran 37" g/r mtr's for about 5 minutes on the trail. Now back to 35s. Only thing I had to do to clear 37s on a 5" lift was to trim the rear wheel well about an inch.

My 5spd 22r spins these 35s just fine with 5.29s. That 2lt will have way more torque, so it'd do much better I'd imagine.

 

You will need to use 30 spline Longfields, but if you're building a front axle to SAS anyways, that's no big deal. The rest of the running gear is fine for 37's. Normally, I would say you would want 5.71's, but with a 2JZ, probably just about any gearing will be fine!

35" MTR's run pretty small - closer to a 33 actually ... it's a significant jump in ground clearance to go to the 37's

 

x2 on the longs with the hub gears...

You CAN wheel without breaking stock birfs and 37s...you just have to use some finesse

and like TC said..different tires measure out differently....my 36" swampers measure at like 34.5"....even less with a few pounds of air in em

Anyway, 35's are a better choice for many reasons, one is that it is much cheaper for you to go that way.

 

If you get 35"s Just make sure you wont regret it. I say if you are going big...go big.

True, but at the same time, 35" (33.9", 1.1" discrepancy) mtr vs 33" (31.7", 1.3" discrepancy) bfg a/t:



Didn't feel like moving the trucks, but standing next to em, (and measuring) my 35mtr's are definitely higher than my 33bfgat's. If you got the money, go big. If you get tires and spare parts for free like me, use what you got

Im at the point where i don't know which way to go, I want big but I don't wanna spend endless hours fixing cvs.

IMO i need longfields which ever way i go, hell the way I wheel, I could do with them for running 33's! I do plan on getting some along with an arb for the front, but........... my funds are stretched way past their limits on the engine swap and SAS as it is, so it might be a while before my front end sees them.

How much easier would I have to take it with the 37's compared to 35's? Will there be that much of a difference?

As for the pics, I could show you some but you would've seen it all before, a standard 2nd gen sitting on axle stands with half the ifs removed, you must have seen that before

 

True, there's a guy over here running 40's on his 2jz hilux with 4.3's lol, but its a dog on the road as you could imagine.
