347 V8 4Runner - Updated
Guys, I'm in the process of building a new 347 stroker engine as the current one has been in my 4Runner since 1993 and done in excess of 270,000klms so its time for a refresh
The new engine will have a custom cam designed for mpg as I do across Oz trips etc so I took a couple of vids for record purposes before she comes out as the new one will idle like a cat

Supra R154 with a 37% overdrive.
Axles are Toyota but splines recut to Dana44 as I fitted a Dana44 third member so I could fit a Detroit Electrac. Have an ARB air locker in the front.
I will be using this custom injection I fabbed and the AFR 185 alloy heads on the new 347.

The ecu limits it to 6250rpm but I run an MSD6AL so it can be overridden but really no need to go higher as it is a 4wd and the current engine is a tad over 300RWHP. I will be using a custom mpg and torque cam in the 347.
It will cruise all day at only 3000rpm

do you ever use our truck to pull trailers or ever work it hard? I am thinking about going to a v8 in my t100 but I am not sure if the v6 rear end can handle the torque while towing a decent size trailer.

Wouldn't be a problem. But if you want to do constant burnouts etc you might have some issues
Prior to fitting the Dana44 I never had any issues with the Toy diff and it was the 4cyl version with the smaller bearings etc and besides normal 4wd I've also towed a heavy V8 inboard speedboat numerous times.

Mate, I did this conversion back in 1993 when my Toy was still under factory warranty
Since then I’ve made many changes to the engine culminating in what you see now but the bottom end has now done in excess of 270,000klms so its time for a refresh
I'm currently building up a 347 and recently finished the block prep

These are some of the new parts
which include
Scat 9000 lightweight stroker crank
Special size Probe forged pistons with perfect seal moly rings.
Special size Probe lightweight rods
Clevite 77 bearings
Romac balancer
Ford Roller lifters
Ford SVO Oil pump drive
Ford SVO mini windage tray
Mellings oil pump
Moroso oil pick up
Pavtek alloy mains girdle
ARP complete engine stud kit
Extreme chrome moly flywheel
Seco pressure plate
Aisin HD truck clutch
Fel Pro gaskets
Ford 90mm Lightning SVO truck MAF
Accufab 80mm race series throttle body
Bosch 36lb injectors
Ford SVO/Rouse Racing HI-VO NASCAR timing chain set
Custom ground US camshaft, springs, titanium retainers and locks.
Also recently finished fully polishing the Scat crank

Have also fabbed a new alloy airbox for the larger MAF

Modified another sump to clear the front diff.

Also using another engine block I’ve done a complete revision of the front accessory brackets to use a Ford p/s and a/c pump and alternator. Only hybrid is the LS1 tensioner

Still got a lot to do but I'll get there

Hey JD,
Looking Great, I like the chamferd crankwheights on the Scat, polishing them can only help windage, very cool.
I thought only old hotrodders knew about those tricks, lol
Are the #1, #2, rod bearings worn on the 270k motor? Or do You have it apart yet?
Spec's on Your custom grind?
If I keep reading this thread, I'm definately going to have to Step Up in the Craftmanship dept.
My ifs pan

Keep it up!
Thanks, Kiwi
edit; Exellent Bracket Work.

Except for the input shaft length being 30mm longer and different gear ratios the Supra R154 is exactly the same as a R150/151 V6 4runner trans so it’s just a simple case of swapping the longer output shaft with a R150/151 shorter version and it will bolt straight up to any R series intermediate housing.
I used the R154 as it has slightly better gear ratios for my V8 and a factory 25% overdrive compared to the R150/151 17% and I found by swapping in the overdrive gears from a R150/151 you get a 37% overdrive, which I did
I had a custom bell housing made to fit the Ford and longer input shaft R154.
But I did some mods so I could get the gear levers better positioned etc. These are old pics but still useful.

Nope yet to pull the existing engine so I've no idea but I wouldn't think this will be an issue.
The cam is a Jay Allen custom cam built to suit my 4Runners weight, engine use etc and I'm not aware of the protocols re custom cams etc but my view is as it was ground especially for me by Jay and paid for accordingly, it's numbers etc are Jay's intellectual property so if you want one, pay for it
