i did a 3.4 swap and the engine is great. but i noticed that the engine would run hotter than i am used too. 206-211 on a cool day. 215 on a hot day. I thought this was happening due to me not having a shroud. i fixed that today and noticed something after the drive, the top of the radiator was HOT but the middle to lower half was cool to the touch.


I thought about the thermostat and checked it, reclocked the jiggler valve and went to filling the radiator back up with fluid, this is were i am stumped. when filling the radiator, the coolant bubbles back up and acts as if there is a blockage of some sort. then after a few seconds a bubble or two come through the funnel and it drinks some more coolant... then stops and bubbles up again.

something isnt right, i know that. i have a newer thermostat that i installed 2 months ago. thought all was normal with the operating temps in the 200s until today when i felt the radiator.

any ideas?

 

Did you fill the block through the upper radiator hose? What shape is the radiator in? Juggler at 6 o'clock position? 180 deg t-stat? Did you check that the t-stat is opening at correct temp?

 

did you use a toyota themostat? i understand it works better with a toyota thermostat.
did you burp the system?

i changed the radiator to a csf 3 core all metal on my swap, but only have the stock guages, so i don't know the numbers.
it runs the same as the original 22re, temp wise anyway.

should run around 180, the thermostat opening temp.

is your radiator in good shape?

 

Had a similar problem with my 22re after swapping radiators I was running in circles ended up re burping the system for some reason it was a nightmare to get all the air outta the system but was all good after never had a system give me such a hard time

 

toyota and a oreillys special. both open up at the same time with the boil test.

so i poured as much coolant down the top hose, then filled the radiator full smashed the pile together for the third time. and now it is running around 188-190.

side note with no shroud, when i was running at idle the funnel fell into the fan, got stuck around the crank pulley and now there is a slight sequel coming from either that or my water pump is mad at me... im so dang happy (sarcasm) right now!

If your funnel just went around the pulley and got spat out, you might have just stretched the belt a little bit. Giving you a squeaky belt.

what i am thinking, plus some coolant might have gotten on the belts. so only time will tell if it goes away.

but the truck is running like a champ now. 188 with no ac, 193 with the ac on. i dig.
