I'm pretty close to making the final ruling on a potential 3.4 swap for my 4Runner.

Most of my reasoning for pushing for a 3.4 swap is Power, MPG, and the fact that I have reason to believe my beloved 3.0 is running on borrowed time, judging by the steady increase in the amount of oil smoke at startup over the past year.

This project would likely be started in Late September, at the earliest.

All of this of course hinges on whether or not the donor engine runs, since as of now, the swap would be more of a personal choice than one of necessity.

A little more about the donor vehicle: I'm not sure if the motor runs, what shape the radiator is in, what parts I need to get with the engine, mileage, compression, and I need to know if there is anything I should be weary of?

Also are there any parts for the swap I need to buy? Or can I just bolt it on, and drive?

So far, this is just an idea, but could become reality in the near future.

Oh yeah, It's optioned out, so I'll be eyeing up that rear axle for an e locker.

 

I hope to begin mine in September as well. I would like to see a fellow CA 3.4 swap go on around the same time for at least some moral support. I just got mine to pass smog for the last time with the 3.0 and it cost me as much as my ORS harness. But at least I don't have to deal with the referee for a little while longer and I can concentrate on getting my truck running the way I want and have my '09 sticker. My 3.0 has low compression on #3 and burns a lot of oil, so I hardly ever drive it any more...

There are some great resources here on YT with the write ups that many have done to document their experience. I'm sure that I will be using them quite a bit once I get into this.

We will see, my financial aid from the college, well what i don't use is going in savings for a 3.4. I can't wait to have that one day, but the 3.0 is turning quite well at the moment (knock on wood).

Question ive been pondering, maybe someone else knows, what would be the proper gear ratio once the 3.4 is in with 33? Just wondering because the 3.0 pushes the 33's good now, but wondering if the 4.56s will be too low with the 3.4?

 

I wouldn't worry about regearing, your rpms will stay the same as they were before the swap. I'm geared with 5.29s and 33's although I could easily pull a higher gear ratio now, the extra torque is pretty sweet.

 

Well im still deciding when/if i swap a 3.4 if i will go with a body lift (which i would want to step up to 35's) and i wonder how that would go with 4.56's?

 

I've been very satisfied with my stock 4.56 gears in my truck, but it does mean that I'll have to re-gear the 4.10 e-locker from my donor.

 

Does anybody know what 4.56's would possibly be like with a 3.4 on 35's?

 

I have 5.29's with 35's and a 5spd... but I feel the revs are to high at 70 - 75 MPH. My plan is to run 37's or more when the 35's wear out, but that's not for sure.

I'd like to try 4.88's but don't want to invest the money going that direction with possible larger meats on the horizon.

 

I'd be OK with 4.30's and 33's right? (after swap/before)

That will likely come before the 3.4.

 

I've pretty much given up on this project, since the 3.4 motor turned out to have a spark plug cross threaded in the block, and 180K miles. I will continue on my quest to regear though.

 

Bummer.

On a side note, i was reading my responses from earlier and laugh that my truck isn't even close to the same when i was talking about it. I find it kinda funny.

i found motor, that i think i might actually buy. If i get mine done before you, i could probably lend a hand if you needed one.
