3.0l ticking gone!

At least what I hear in the cab. I replaced the steering shaft seal at the firewall and now I cant even hear a single tick inside the cab. Before I could hear her tick tick ticking on down the road quite fine. I noticed every yota at the salvage yard had a torn seal as well, I figured people wrecked them because the ticking was driving them crazy.

Well done! I have the same ticking noise that makes me pray I will get hit hard enough to total the truck but not hard enough to total me!

I found one rubber grommet on the firewall that had come loose and putting it back helped some.

Where did you see the tear on your steering shaft seal? From the inside or in the engine compartment?

Do you have to pull the steering wheel or just undo the knuckle under the dash and slide the new seal over? Thanks

You have to look under the dash where the shaft goes through the firewall, the brake booster keeps you from seeing it in the engine comartment. It's pretty easy, you have to remove the bolt on the u-joint under the dash and the bolt on the collapsing section in the engine compartment, then slide the shaft in and out to remove it. Once you get the shaft out it's just two bolts that holds the seal in. It's pretty easy and the shaft has flats on it so it can only go in one way.

The only real ticking I get with mine is the Fuel Pressure Regulator; it ticks like a M#th$rf&(ker. I wonder if I coated it with rubberized coating it would quiet it down?

My FPR is what's making all my ticking as well, just the noise was getting into the cab via the torn steering shaft seal.

I had good luck using some soundproofing mat. One piece I had gotten at Pep Boys and is kind like a giant sheet of belly button lint with foil on one side. The other is Fat Mat, heavy foil-covered self-stick about 1/8 inch thick. I put some on both sides of the firewall where the steering column shaft goes through. But I would like to replace the rubber seal. Do any of you have the part number for that? Can't find it in the FSM or at World Toyota.

And I'll have to check my FPR to see if it's that or the injectors. If its the FPR it is going to get some Fat Mat.
