I've only put 10k miles on it since I bought it in May of this year. That said, I love the sound of the engine with the stock muffler, the low end torque, and I'm satisfied with the power of the engine as long as I drive speed limit plus 10or so. Maintenance-wise nothing has been done to the engine except some seal replacement and some dealership recalls ('nuff said on the recall). If you ignore the toyota-expectations that everyone has, 150k trouble-free miles is downright awesome for any vehicle in the United States.
I also love the fact that parts are easy to find (classified section has a 3vze being parted out every week or so) and you've got this awesome website called Yotatech where hundreds of toyota-techs (many not by choice...) help you diagnose and fix your engine.

The 3.0 is a great engine. I wish it had a little less low end torque. It can be a bit difficult to not lay rubber at every turn. It lasts practically forever. And, on the rare occasions where work is needed, I would say it is easier than the 22R and slightly more involved than the 22RE.
The only real downside is that there are fewer upgrade options than with 22R series.

Lousy mileage, poor volumetric efficiency, sparse aftermarket support, pain in the ass to work on, but has rock solid reliability. Power is adequate for the pickup trucks after uncorking the intake and exhaust. Anything heavier than 3000lbs and this engine will be a dog without extensive modification.

nice motor overall. very reliable and fairly simple to work on. ISR mod and headers make this dog a pretty peppy pup. good low end torque and ok horsepower. i hate to say it but i've fallen in love with this little gas guzzler. maybe its more the runner i love but either way this motor is great overall. when the cash starts flowin i plan on upgrading the cams and installing downey or NWOR headers.

sure mine popped a HG at 275000 miles but I still love mine!!
Rock solid engine every bit as reliable as a 5vzfe.
do the usual bolt ons like a nice exhuast and a FIPK (kn filter kit) then add cams and headers and it should wake even a slushbox equipped 4runner...

Ballet Dancer
I think people forget how great the 3VZ-E was when it first showed up in a Toytruck. Sure - it has been superceded by some of Toyota's more recent offerings, but what hasn't. Time marches on. It's still a good motor.
Here is something I remember reading before I bought my truck (4x4) and that I saw again recently on this site:
http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do...ticleId=102944
In naming the Toyota Xtracab SR5 V6 its 1989 Truck of the Year, Motor Trend wrote that "…without the extra burden of the hardware necessary to drive the front wheels, the 2WD truck kicks up its heels with the unbound abandon of a ballet dancer. A liquid clutch and five-speed manual shifter changed the gears with delightful precision. To support the fury available under your right foot is a complete rack of readable analog instruments nestled in an instrument binnacle whose view is unimpeded."
