Ok guys I need some advise. My brother has a 1990 4runner with a 3.slow. We had a leaking valve cover so we went in and replaced it along with the manifold seals and so on. We also did new plug wires, air filter and a set of NGK Gpower plugs ( the guy at autozone said these plugs didn't need to be gap'ed so we didn't). Now we have everything back together and the motor seems to idle fine but it hesitates pretty bad off idle. The motor also sounds a little funny at the exhaust. Like a putt putt sound. We have checked that all the vac lines are in the correct spot except for at the BVSV valve (we will check that in the morning. Other than that I have no idea what could be causing the problem. Any advise would really helpfull.

 

Welcome to YT! Did you check your timming? Also the putt putt sound could be running on 5 cyls.

 

Are you sure there are no air/vac leaks??

I had a fouled cylinder 1 plug and it was making a sound similar. (hard to explain over the computer)

Make sure all the plug wires are on all the way!

 

Did you check and adjust the gaps after you realized you had an issue?

 

X2 on what Abe said. Always check the gap on new plugs, no matter what. Remember, not all the people at vatozone, advanced, or where ever, know everything. Always gap your plugs, always.
