3.0 Engine Rebuild?

Hey guys,
Maybe you can help me with this one. I have a 95 limited 4runner 4x4 with 132k on it. Nothings wrong with it ... so far..( knock on wood ) .. anyways Ive been thinking about sending my truck in to get an engine rebuild..replace rods and pistons ect. ect.. My question is How much do you think it will cost .. cuz i cant do that kind of stuff my self. .. and also if lets say it gets rebuilt n stuff...How much better will it be.. will it have some more power .. will the miles basically go back to zero?

Any info would help

Thanks in advance

don't waste your time with a rebuild with that few miles...if u are going to pull it, do a 3.4 swap. just search 3.4 swap and you will find more than enough information

If it ain't broke don't fix it. You could start by getting a compression test, if it's within spec and it's not burning huge quantities of oil I'd leave it alone. Even a brand new 3.0 won't have huge amounts of power. If that's what you're looking for consider a 3.4 swap.

But i dont think my car shop can do that sorta thing.. i dont have the tools or knowledge to do anything like that myself...

So you dont think it would help at all?

What about replacing the clutch and bearings in the tranny?
nothing is wrong with the tranny..its just i want to give it new life so nothing bad happens down the road...

just some thoughts i had

Thanks for the imput by the way

what you are trying to do for your 3.slow would be a lost cause. my old 3.0 slung a rod and the newly rebuilt one from the guys in oregon doesn't have any more power

if it aint broke dont fix it is the best advise. a rebuild from a GOOD tech would prob. cost between 2 to 3 k. and no it wont give it any more life or power unless u currently are having problems.

Gears?

Agreed, don't rebuild the 3.0 until it blows up. If you are looking for more power, some lower gears ie. 4.88 or 5.29's would help the 3.0. You may lose some top end, but this is probably the best way to get more "power" out of the 3.0. My advice is to check out some of the threads on differential gear ratio and what others have done.

If you have money is buring a hole in your pocket do the 3.4 swap.

I vote to leave it be until it spews antifreeze from the exhaust and oil from the radiator. Then don't waste money on another just slap in a 3.4. My 4runner forced me to learn how to work on engines (and bad mechanics).

Replace the clutch when it starts to slip, you won't save anything by doing it early. As for the tranny they usually outlast everything else on the vehicle. The best thing you can do is change the fluids regularly, and you should get another 132k.

I know that everyone will cringe when I bring this up... I have searched and searched all the forums and I never could come up with the answer to this one:

Is there anything to do to minimize the chance of blowing a headgasket in the 3vze? I heard something about different headers or a new thermostat.

I think the best thing you can do is keep the cooling system in good shape, you don't want to overheat the engine. As for the headers there has been talk about the crossover passage burning the #6 exhaust valve, but I don't know if it affects the gasket.

I had over 230k on my 3.0 when I sold it and the gaskets were still original. Every time I went near the stealer they wanted to change them under the recall but I didn't want them opening up a perfectly good engine.
