3.0 3vz-e

I recently got a 92 pickup with the 3.0 3VZ-E. i replaced the radiator. i called the guy who orgionally had it and he said when he sold it it had a blown head gasket. i changed the thermostat and it still was running hot. the water wouldnt flow through the motor. i took the top radiator hose off and steam would come out.. i turned the truck off and the water came through. i took the water pump off and with the dual overhead cams the impeller inside turns backwards and nobody i talk to knows anything about a water pump for a dual overhead cam setup. maybe some people on here have replaced a water pump on this motor and can lead me in the right direction.

My head hurts.... hard to muddle through your question.

Are you saying you are the 3rd owner... and the first owner blew a HG, and then sold it to someone... who then sold it to you?

Do you know if the bad HG was repaired? Do you know if it was repaired by someone who was qualified and used the correct methods and parts?

To me, you need to figure out the HG story first. A new water pump won't solve that issue.

Also, the 3.0 motors are not "dual overhead cam"... so that's a bit confusing as well.

Right... single cam per head. I guess if you consider there are two total then you have "dual" overhead cams.

So, did the car lot repair the HG? Did they disclose the problem if they didn't?

Replacing the water pump is straightforward enough. Just need to do a timing belt job at the same time since you will have it all apart.

But... if you have a bad HG the water pump wont help you. In fact, you may have other serious problems depending on how long the motor was run with a bad HG.

Well... I'd contact the car lot and get some more information.

If they sold your the vehicle with a bad motor, I think you'd have some recourse and be able to return it. Assuming you haven't taken to many things apart yet.

Of course, if you got a great deal and are planning to rebuild the 3.0 anyway... that's another option. What year and model did you get? One with a blown 3.0 should be around $1000 or less in my opinion. Considering you could easily be looking at putting $1000 or more into rebuilding the 3.0. A HG replacement would be around $400 minimum (no machine work, all your own labor).

Search here on YT and learn more about 3.0 and HG replacement. There are several tests you can do to determine if it is bad.

The picture you posted is the correct timing belt routing. So, unless you have changed something since the pic... the water pump is rotating correclty.

Honestly, I think it would be close to impossible to make the water pump turn the wrong way and still have the timing belt operate correctly.

A blown HG wont have anything to do with coolant getting to the motor. Ive never taken my water pump off so i dont know which way it turns. It sounds like youre on the right track with the water pump though.

this is the way i have it ran. but it turns opposite of like a ford. on a ford the impellars catch water and throw it on this water pump it goes the other way this is what my pump looks like. looking at it the way it sit in the picture the thing in the middle should turn to the left for the water to get in but on my motor it turns the other way is tht normal for toyotas?

Give the vin number to toyota and see if its part of the recall. That might fix all your problems for free.

yeah do that

I dont see any way lossible that the water pump could be runnign backwards????? If it were than the timing belt would be miss alligned and it wouldnt run at all. It oule be a safer bet that is it is failing.
