3.0 to 22re conversion - what is needed

i was reading from the many threads i searched for info on a 3.0 to 22re.

some were good and some were bad.

(stand by- backstory needed)

i bought a 89 4unner for a 1000 bucks. bad headgasket. then when on leave a guy gave me a 22re for fixing his fence. yay!

---now---
i have the harness and the computer from the truck that the engine came from.

do i
a. rebuild the 3.0 ( i know about the headgasket issues...)
b. rebuild the 22re (needs new pistons and is only 85% complete.) no alt. distr. manifold. ac or pwr steering.
-----------figured i would use what i could from the 3.0---dont now what will match up and what will not---
c. wait a year before i can get the money for a 3.4 i dont want to get one til i can do it right.

from what i read the 3.0 to 22re is a pain if you dont have all the sensors... i dont! it is a pain to wire... I hate wiring!
and i know it is weaker!

the truck is for offroad use only 10% on road use.
only need: power steering, brakes, speedo, and fuel to work. everything else is "extra".
will be a basic expeditionary rig. no creature comforts.

thanks in advance.

Nothing from the 3.0 will work on the 22re......or vice-versa.

It appears you lack quite a bit to even complete a 3.0/22re swap. I wouldn't even think it's worth it. Much less rebuilding the 3.0 when you could just hang on to your money and swap in the 3.4 in a year. Or, are you just hot to have something in right now??? If that's the case, then just rebuild the 3.0. People have had HG issues, but not everyone. I never have.

ive not had HG issues...yet. if it were me, i would probably rebuild both, and clean them up really well, sell em both to fund the 3.4. thats what i intend to do once im ready to swap.

From: Bryan Tx,
Even if the 22re was complete, would the trans bolt up with the 3.0's clutch ect? I am doubting it. I like the 22re much better than the 3.0, but in this case I would stick with what you have. I bet we could replace the head gaskets on the v6 & still come out cheaper than the 4cyl swap.

Just do the head gasket on the 3.0. There are thing you can do to mkae sure you dont pop another gasket, such as keeping cooling system up to spec, using headed wrap on the manifold etc. I really like this motor for wheeling. Its not a powerhouse, but has plenty of low end grunt. I prefer my 3.0 over my 22re. Ive had headgasket issues, but it was my own fault (hydo locked)

i'd say ditch the 3.0 to 22re idea, don't get me wrong, my 94 2wd pickup has a 22re and i love it, but you would have to swap alot less stuff to do a 3.4 swap. and it's a more powerful, more reliable engine
