3.0 to 2.7 swap questions.

Hi everyone. I was wondering if anyone had taken out a 3.0 and put a 2.7 in it's place? I have a '91 4runner with a 3.0/5spd and I would like to go to a 2.7/5spd. I know I'll need to fab motor mounts and use a turbo 4cyl bellhousing .But what else will I need to do? Thanks----Tom

I haven't ever heard of anyone doing this swap, but I was thinking of the same thing myself if I couldn't come up with anything to do with my 3.0L. I'm going to be following this thread very closely.

Hey Tom, welcome to YT! I feel kind of strange pointing you to a different forum after your first post, but you should check out the marlincrawler forum. Those guys seem to be dropping 2.7's into to everything. Mostly replacing 20r & 22re engines, but you should check it out. Marlin's son has done a few swaps and seems to have really done his homework on those swaps.

[hijack] Is it possible to get more power out of the 2.7L than out of the 3.0? I'm just curious, because everyone complains of the power their 3.0 doesn't have, but I don't hear many people complain about the 4cyl.

This kinda reminds me of the "I wanna swap out my 3.0 for a 22re for the milage and reliability" posts.

You will be much better off with a 3.4 then a 2.7. More power, simular milage, same cost, more information available and likely easier considering you already have a 3.0 drivetrain in there.

I would really consider a 2.7 in an early 2.4 truck that was build for serious off road use mainly because it is smaller in the engine bay and a little simpler compaired to a 3.4. That is the only time I think it is really viable.

The 3rz has the same hp and IIRC less torque then your 3.0 so don't expect a more fun to drive vehicle. The costs to build for more power on the 3.0 are about the same or less compaired to the 2.7.

If your 3.0 is getting tired or is toast I would suggest rebuilding it for more power. Thats just me though.
