on my 2wd i have an 7.5" rear. i want to go to 4.10's or 4.30's i would like to keep my 5 lug pattern to match the front. i know in 2wd's there are some 4.10's out there but they don't appear to be common. what is going to be my best option for swapping gears, finding an 7.5" third with 4.10's, going to an 8" rear (preferred as there is no lockers available for the 7.5) out of an 2wd or swapping bolt patterns to an 2wd pattern or swapping front to an 6 lug pattern? going to an 6 lug pattern is not really preferred as then i would need new rims and to get my tires remounted. what will be my best option with the most commonly available parts?

 

I was under the impression that I couldn't swap into an 8in rear...!

What all has to happen for this??

 

The 86-95 IFS front 3rd is a 7.5"... i dont know for sure if the gears from a 4.10 IFS 3rd will fit in the 2wd rear housing, but i know that the lockright for the IFS front will fit in the rear.


i plan on regearing my 2wd to 4.10s and i plan on using an old ifs front 3rd for the gears.

 

you can but an 4wd rear is soa and an 2wd rear is sua and they have different lug patterns

'86-95 IFS trucks and 4Runners, and all '93-98 T100s use a 7.5" front diff that is offset to the passenger's side. Later models came with ADD (Automatic Differential Disconnect) which uses a vacuum actuated mechanism to disconnect the drivers side axle shaft from the differential. Carriers and gear sets are interchangeable between the two different versions (and also happen to be the same as used in the 2wd Toyota pickup 7.5" diffs). One difference between ADD and non-ADD diffs is that the carrier in an ADD differential has needle bearings supporting the axle shafts at the differential. The non-ADD diffs did not have this bearing and sometimes the passenger side axle flange wears the carrier and becomes loose or wobbly, eventually causing oil leaks, noise, and possible spider gear damage. ADD and non-ADD diffs are swappable as are most of their parts. This makes it possible to change your ADD diff to non-ADD by simply swapping parts as I've done in the picture to the right. This is desirable to some people since some of the ADD stubs are smaller diameter than the non-ADD stubs and are therefore slightly weaker.

ok i miss spoke about the lockers i should have said there are very little available lockers for the 7.5 there's the arb rd 90 (edit PT 1611 in the above post) and lock right are the only two i have found so far.

and no they don't all come with 4.10's its actually fairly rare to get the 4.10's in an 2wd mine has like 3.27's or something like that in it.

 

you can find 4.10 IFS 3rds on craigslist all day... get one, and use the gears in your rear housing. then run a lockright.

 

Or an aussie because they are cheaper, more reliable, and you can actually order one.

so looking at my build plate, its showing FJ11 for my axle code. my truck came with a 7.5'' axle=F which i already know but then it has a J11? whats the J stand for and the 11 means 4.44 gears, that dont sound right.

The FJ11 is your TR (Trim) code. Look further to the left and you will see A(Axle)/TM(Trans.)

According to link at off-road.com you have a 7.5 inch with 3.42 gears, two pinon.

At least at stock...

So, your axle code is A01A.

 

i have looked it up before and if your not going to contribute anything useful to my thread please don't post.

 

also i think i may have an axle sitting in my driveway. its under my 79 Toyota motor home, i jacked up the rear tire and checked (the door tag is not legible) and i get a little more than 4 rotations of the drive shaft out of 2 rotations of the tire (open diff only one tire in the air) so it has 4.10's or 4.30's i am going to be swapping that axle out for the proper full floater axle anywhere. one thing i want to determine though is if its an 8 inch or an 7.5 inch what is the easiest way to visually determine this

After looking at the link again myself I guess it doesn't specify what a 7.5 in differential looks like... But if yours looks like any of those 8 inch ones then you can be pretty sure that it's 8 in... and assume it's 7.5 if it doesn't.




EDIT:

I was thinking again...if you want to be absolutely sure... The guy at Just Differentials emailed me a copy of the bolt patterns; the 7.5" and 8" diffs. have different patterns.

Maybe he can do the same for you. Call him up.
