2nd gen 4runner gearing question.

Hey guys, I snagged a rear end from a 2nd gen 4runner before it got crushed at the junkyard. Now please, if someone could organize this in my brain. It was a V6 Auto, which i thought would be 4.88. Then I brought it home and saw it was pink which would imply 4.10, correct? I counted the teeth which were 41, which would also imply 4.10. I thought that the 4 Cyl Auto came with 4.30's and the V6 Auto came with 4.88's. Or was it purey based on tire size package from factory? Or, did I make all of this up?

I believe it was only the v6 autos that came from the factory with 31 inch tires that came with 4:88s. The ones that came with 225s etc had different gearing if I remember correctly.

I think the autos with the smaller tire package had 4.56s...

Counting the ring and pinion teeth doesn't lie.

I never assume any gearing even what the door says. I always count cause who knows what the POs have done in 20 years.

Thanks for the info guys!
Does anyone know where I can find a chart or info on this? One with the tire sizes preferably.

No and no. There were many different setups from the factory. My '90 came from the factory with 3.0, auto, 4.56s, and 31s.

If you know your gears are stock, check your axle code. Otherwise count teeth like wabbit said or count driveline rotations if you don't want to open it up.
