22re won't start for some reason

hey guys,

i have a 91 short bed deluxe with a 22re manual tranny. it has recently took a dramatic turn for the worse as far as fuel economy goes and now it wont start. i had to replace the brake and fuel lines along with the fuel pump mounting bracket due to rust. After this work was done the mileage dropped to about 10mpg. Then just the other day when I started it, it cranked right up but would bog down and die but after the second start it would idle ok but if i touched the gas it would bog but after it ran for a little bit, like a min or so, it would run fine and id be on my way no issues. Yesterday i hopped in and it started but quickly bogged out died and wont start anymore. It seemed like it wasn't getting fuel but when i smell the exhaust after trying to start it it smells like gas so i dont think its the fuel delivery system at all and i have new plugs in it but it seems like its not getting any spark.. any ideas?

cheers

jono

Miles???

If its raining outside or looks like rain, or feels like rain... its the coil.

Otherwise you need to check for fuel pressure in the rail, and spark. I doubt it jumped the chain, but thats possible too.

It may also be time for a rebuild.

have you replaced your fuel filter? theres one in the tank and one on the passenger side of the motor. if you remove the passenger side front wheel and this small little flap then the fuel filter sits right there and its easy to get to. if its stock and corroded then good luck getting it off..i had to cut the lines and torch the filter then redo the connections for the new filter. Happy hunting!

Before the work was done were there any other indicators you can think of? White smoke from exhaust, rich smell, sputter?

No code checker, its an OBD1 ECU

12mpg sounds like you need to check tire pressure and other adjustments & filters. Mine just turned in 14mpg with oversize tires so that might be about right.

I'd do a complete tune up..check timing maybe nudge it a degree more advance..plus run some seafoam through it. Maybe whatever was being pumped through it was bad gas. Throw that in and after another tank or 2 check your mpg and your spark plugs.
