22re timing chain question

Timing chain and sprockets (and guides) in good condition - recently replaced. Chain has one bright link on it. Anyone have a count of links between crank sprocket dimple and cam sprocket dimple?

Any other ideas on how to install chain (with correct timing) with only a single bright link?

Engine completely apart - opportunity knocks...

If I recall correctly (unlikely), the dimple on the cam sprocket should be straight up (12 o'clock position), with the crank sprocket straight down (6 o'clock).

I just checked a chain and the bright links were at exact opposite ends.

correct, the cam gear dimple is actually at just before 12:00 (like 11:55), the crank gear at 6. equal number of links between the two.

I only have a single bright link - on the entire chain. So there's no way for me to count from one to the other. I suppose - if you are correct about equal links - I could determine where the mid-point is from my single bright link.

Sounds a little less than scientific but what the heck, it is a 20 year old (totally awesome) vehicle.

You could count the links to find the other one, or just make sure that your sprockets are lined up when you put the chain on. Heck, my shiny links aren't even anywhere near the marks.

OK, so I am comfortable getting the sprockets lined up. I'm gonna install the chain with the single bright link at the crank dimple, then make sure I have the same number of links fron crank dimple to cam dimple on each side.

Engine stands rock....

If you want to save yourself the hassle of counting, just hold the shiny link and pull the chain straight (with the chain off the sprockets). It'll be VERY easy to tell which link is it's exact opposite.
