so here's my little dilemma, I took off the base pan last night to clean it up and check if the timing chain guides were intact or not. So when i removed it, there were pieces of chain guide in the pan but it appeared that the chain was replaced. I'm guessing this because the front of the base pan where it meets with the chain cover had newer gasket maker over it, and the rest of the pan had the old whiteish sealant over it. so it appears to me that the guides broke, and were replaced without removing the pan,

My question is should I take the valve cover off and look at the guides and then do the timing chain if necessary or should I not worry about it?

yes definatly take the rocker cover off and inspect the timing chain guides. When i did a rebuild on mine i thought it would be impossible to change the timing chain without pulling the head and pan as when you put the timing cover back in place you will compromise the seal on both the head gasket and the oil pan. Dont take chances when it comes to your timing chain.. Even if the guides are new i personally would want to re do my gaskets so i know its done right and there is nothing floating around in my engine..

valve cover is easy to take off. get all the vacuum lines off, and then it's 4 acorn nuts. you'll be able to see the chain and it's condition

True, the piece of mind knowing everything is new and sealed well is definitely a push into doing it! I think i'll eventually be getting a whole front end kit from engnbldr.com along with all the gaskets need for head. if i'm going at the chain, i might as well do the head gasket too.

took the cover off. looked great underneath, both guides seemed to have been replaced, some cutting off the side of the casing but it looks to be only the carbon was scrapped off. the chain is loose on the right side, is it supposed to be like that?




i don't think i'm going to worry about it just yet. It runs smooth and the money isn't here right now so a future job for me when i'm bored.

Also when i was taking off the vacuum lines on top of the cover, I found one that had no where to go, does anyone know it there is suppose to be more in that vacuum area that what i have?

That's weird, my blue valve doesn't have a hook up for two hoses.

Edit: Looked at it, the blue valve does have two but both are hooked up to something..
