I just got done overhauling my 22RE and it drove great for about the first week until I filled up with a fresh tank of gas. I'm using 92 octane because I have staged parts in the engine. When I overhauled the motor the truck sat for about 2-3 months I put a sedative in the gas to help keep it from clogging up. The engine has pretty much new everything except MAF, O2 sensor. Iv'e heard that the issue could be gas clogging in filter etc. After I filled up it started sputtering when I had the gas pedal about half way in then when I floored it, it had no sputtering anymore. I thought it was the timing so I timed it and it is still having issues. Not sure what the issue is I need help... Thanks.

 

My old VW Golf did this twice.

First time was the plugs were fouled. You mentioned you added a stabilizer to the fuel tank? Check to see if the plug tips have been fouled because of it. My Golfs plugs were able to drive normally past a certain load because the voltage being applied at a higher load was able to overcome whatever plugged it up in the first place.

Second time was a faulty gasket at the MAF. It was folded not creating a proper seal eventually making the sensor wire go bad from the unfiltered air coming from the sides.

Thanks, I'll try and start with changing my plugs and plug wires. I'll get back to you when I change them later today and see how it runs.

 

Another thing to check would be for air leaks. Past a certain engine load there is no more vacuum therefor the severity of the leak may lessen until you go back to an idle. Another thing to check would be your EGR. Make sure its not staying on all the time. That would lean out your fuel mixture and make it run crappy until the vacuum goes down then the valve would shut and explain why it would only happen at the low rpms.

 

It also has trouble holding an idle when coming to a stop at a stop light. I think that mostly happens when it is colder during morning hours. I'll check my EGR could it be that when i painted it black some of the paint got inside and it is causing it to run crappy?

 

Can you describe the idle? Is it hunting, low, high?

Yes, paint could possible have gummed things up if it went in there. I had an issue with my idle on my '94 P/U. It hunted up and down some days and stayed high on others. It turned out to be a faulty dashpot preventing my butterfly valve to close completely. I removed it and all is well.

On the other hand, a faulty plug could lead to an idle issue

 

It goes low and tries to stay alive then dies out. Then I'll start the truck up again and rev the engine couple times and it will start holding an idle again. Then I'd stop at the next stop light and the same thing would happen again.

 

Check for the faulty plugs, frayed wires and cap first. Then try Toxics advice on the air leak. carb cleaner will work, but better with a small propane torch. check out this video for the leak test .

Go down the list from there.

Alright thank you for your help. I'll start by timing the engine to 5* BTDC and changing spark plugs and wires. If that doesn't fix the issue I will look into the EGR and further issues.

 

I tried changing spark plugs and wires. It seems to idle better. Haven't driven it yet, as soon as I try to move the truck it dies out on me. Can't figure out what is going on.
