22RE sounds like diesel

I have a recently rebuilt 22re motor in an 89 pickup that is sounding like a diesel motor when idle. When under load it still sounds off and a little under powered (but it's also pushing 33" tires). I took it to a different mechanic who adjusted the timing chain and said to just "run it" but it has a bad knock and drives me nuts. Any ideas? It also had a new oil pump after rebuild because mechanic said oil pump controls tensioner on timing chain? Is that right? I'll take any ideas as I could find similar symptoms on forum.

Are you sure your timing's on, between the head and crank?

Did you set the timing with the jumper in?

Are the valves set correctly, they should be set hot.

Did you prime the oil pump on install?

.

Mine sounds like a diesel too because the header gasket is shot.

Diesels come in many different sounds.
Some quiet, some a ping, a tick, a knock, a thump, a whump, a grrrbrrgrrbrr....

Sound clip, kthnxbai?

Most likely exhaust leak or valve lash out of spec though.

Is it a "tick tick tick" or a "tock tock tock"? I had a lousy rebuilt from ATK that folks would comment "sounded like a Diesel". It had so many other problems that I scrapped it at about 60K miles.

i call header gaskets. replace them all including the little ones on the air injection tube. Then snug them all down nice and tight including the bolts in the center holes of the air injection tube where it meets the header.

But not too tight!!

Let's not forget it's an aluminum head and those holes like to strip (just like mine did....). Torque to spec and don't over torque, unless you like helicoiling

I'm working on posting video/sound but its also temperamental and doesn't always do it. The engine probably only has 1000 miles on rebuild and started sounding bad with less than 500. Its a long story but shop did sh#tty work then sold the business so I'm stuck with shady work and trying to correct the $2K rebuilt motor which is a little better than a big paper weight.

Both timing chain and distributor timing is adjusted. Wouldn't the oil pump prime itself? Been driving it for hundreds of miles now.

Wasn't header. Bolts didn't even budge. The valves were professional adjusted by a trusted mechanic...

You can have a adj. timing chain "SPROCKET" but that is to adj your cam timing not the chain tension. And I know U don't have that set up. Did he actually pull the TC off? I would think U would know as U would have a $400 bill. Sounds like a rod knocking and thats a big problem .
I watched him remove the valve cover, adjust the valves and timing chain on the sprocket...

Here is a video of the engine running and making the diesel sound. It sounds like valves more than any exhaust leak to me.
