22RE rocker arm shims

22RE rocker arm shims
When I got my remanufactured head today I layed the rocker arm assy into place and noticed that some of the rockers don't line up perfectly with the valve lash pads. I basically need to disassemble the rocker assembly and shim some of them over a few thousanths so they align properly.
My question: Do these shims exist and does Toyota (or anyone else) sell them?

Spacers
tOYOTA SELLS A REPLACEMENT PART FOR WORN ROCKER ARM SPACERES. THEY ARE A 2 PIECE SLIP COLLAR SO YOU DON'T HAVE TO TEAR THE ASSEMBYL APART. THE PLASTIC ONES CAN BE CAREFULLY CUT OFF AND THE NEW 2 PIECE ONES CLAMP RIGHT AROUND THE ROCKER SHAFT. DON'T HAVE A PART # IN FRONT OF ME, BUT MY DEALERSHIP HAD THEM IN STOCK.

over time they tend to not line up quite right, but most people say that thats fine as long as theyre close. Mine are off a little bit and have been since i bought the truck 5k miles ago, and I havent had any problems.
There are shims available if you're the anal type. I forget who makes them, but if you do a search there was a similar thread fairly recently.

I have a '94 22re with a stage 1 Toyota cam. I installed new rockers and adjusters when I installed the cam about 5,000 miles ago.Today all of a sudden there was a loud tappet noise. (like a rocker was out of adjustment) I shut it off for a min. and then started back up. It was fine for 20 min. and then it did it again.I pulled the cover off and can't find anything wrong.I did notice on the exhuast rockers on #2 and #3 cyl.that you could actually slide the rocker over on the rocker shaft and have thr adjuster screw "drop" off the valve stem.No other rockers are capable of doing that. The springs on those two rockers are not as compressed as the others on the shafts. On the intake rocker shaft they have spacers but not on the exhust side.I think that is my problem.Have you ever heard of that before?

They don't line up perfectly on a new OEM motor.
If you're the retentive type, you need to check their contact pattern with machinist dye.. the pattern of contact is what is critical.

Can this be the cause of my tapping sound i hear. I recently adjusted my valves and got new adjuster screws, but the rocker arm is not straight on the pad slighlty off. Would shimming this up help with the noise?

The tapping is probably caused by your valve cover being over-tightened. There is very little clearence between the rockers and the cover. If you tighten them to factory specs they will make contact. Sometimes this contact is only intermittent and will make a tapping sound with no rythm. Toyota put out a TSB on this stating that the valve cover bolts are to be tightened until the rubber washers just start to crush. The rubber should not start to bulge out by any significant amout.

No. My subscription to alldata expired for my truck. I am pretty sure that is where I saw it. I can remember it saying to tighten the bolts until the rubber washer just start to bulge, and go no farther. If you tighten the bolts to the torque in the FSM you may have rocker arm contact. I know it happened on my truck when I followed the FSM.

over tightening a valve cover will not cause the rocker arm adjusters to hit. It is physically impossible. I had a valve ticking noise in my 22RE motor and decided to replace the valve Adjusters. The ones that were in the motor or three sixteenth of an inch taller in the factory Toyota Adjusters
Here is a photo of my rocker arm. There is a shiny spot on both the rocker arm and the valve cover baffle where they contacted. I have a couple of rocker arms with this shiny spot that correspond to shiny spots on the valve cover baffle.
I previously thought that Toyota put out a TSB on this issue, but I just went through all the TSBs and could not find it. I must have read it somewhere else. Regardless of whether or not a TSB was issued, it is possible for them to make contact.
