22RE Rebuild Tips/Tricks?
Hey everyone, first post so I'll fill you in.
I bought an 89 4runner with a blown head gasket. The engine is from a 86, but the previous owner yoinked the healthy 89 and swapped for his 86. Soooo I came into possession of a truck with a sick motor and a bed full of the rest of the engine bay fixins. A risky move, I know, but the further down I tore the engine, the more optimistic I became. It looks to me that the rest if the engine was in good shape, except for the warped head, and contaminated coolant, which I assume caused the blown gasket. So here is where Im at now:
New pro head w/ RV 261c cam and master rebuild kit is on its way from Engnbldr. I have the engine stripped and next will be gutting (pistons & crank). Then cleaning and prepping.
So here's my question:
Do any of you out there with your big bags of experience have any tips or tricks specific to rebuilding the 22RE?
(not looking for a step-by-step, and I have a FSM) more of "something I learned or wish I had done"
Is there anything I can do at this point to save myself big head aches later?
Before you go nuts out there, I do know what the search function is, that's how I found Engnbldr.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

OK, so here's where Im at:
Block gutted and ready for cleaning. Somebody has been in here recently... The cylinder walls are still scored and in great shape, same for the bearings and journals. If it weren't for cylinder #3 and a little of 4 (those are the naughty cylinders), I would not have taken everything out, but they need to be honed. And I have orange gasket maker all over everything, I guess that guys tube was about to expire.
So Next I will start scrubbing, then painting. Parts should be here next week and then I get to try and fit everything back together.
oh yeah... picked up some Plastigauge today; trying to stay away from the machine shop.
Orange gasket maker
Parts (That's the naughty #3 in the pan)
